Greetings All,

Well, after two years I have finally gotten settled in here at my new place in southeast Nebraska. Recently I picked up a pair of like new Remington 788's at a show. One of them was in .308 and the other was in .22-250 (only $400.00 each!).

I am trying to decide what scope to put on the .22-250. I am considering the Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 Target Dot, the Bushnell 4200 6-24x40 Target Dot and the Weaver and Burris of same ilk. Any suggestions would be great. I don't know much about the side focus on the Nikon but have had experience with the regular objective focus on the Bushnell.

Any help would be appreciated as there are plenty of coyotes round here to shoot with this like new 250!

Sincerely,
Joe Chambers

Re: What Varmint Scope?

I have had nothing but good things to say about the 4200 line of scopes, then new ones are nicer than the old ones. We have 3 soon to be 4 among two of us with no issues.

LOL! That's a good one fdkay. I will take a look at it indeed. I also found a Vortex brand that looks pretty nice. Anyone heard of them? My uncle put one on his CZ .22 and said he likes it very much.

So anyone got an opinion on the side focus over the front objective focus? Pros, cons, etc???

Joe

Re: What Varmint Scope?

Pro's of the side focus:
Less movement to focus (shooters movement)
Far easier to focus while maintaing proper cheekweld.
Can use flip up lens caps.

Con's:
adds another piece of glass to the equation impacting light transmission.
another piece of glass that must be ground correctly.
It is another mechanical feature to break

Objective lens adjustment: more precise, does not add another piece of glass, more robust, less prone to mechanical failure.

I prefer the SF, they are just easier to use and I like lens caps versus bikini scope covers.

2 of my 4 scopes are Bushnell Elites (6-24x50 and 10x40). I like them. They are a great value. Though if you're looking at the 4200 6-24x40, take a closer look at the 6-24x50. It has superior tactical/target turrets which are VERY GOOD.

Re: What Varmint Scope?

DZ,
I have owned and used the 3 scopes (including the Vortex you mentioned)you are looking at. They are all good and have their own pros and cons.
This is my simple evaluation...
The target dots are great when shooting in good conditions with good light...my opinion is they don't hold up too well under more adverse conditions. The Bushnell is a very fine wire and I believe 1/8 dot. It is tiny and hard to distinguish when hunting. The Nikon is similar, it also has tall target turrets. If you decide on one of these scopes for hunting, I would look a the mil-dot or duplex reticle...available in both models.
My current choice is the the Vortex Viper with the Mil reticle. The adjustments don't match the reticle...but when this is used as a predator or P-dog rifle I use the reticle for holding off. It is large enough to see, yet fine enough to shoot consistently at an moa sized targets to 1000 yards.
You can't go wrong with any of these scopes, buy the one that you like and go shoot with it.

Good Luck and enjoy

The 6-24x50 bushnell has worked for me

Re: What Varmint Scope?

im a fan of the buckmasters, but i wouldn't get the target dot. i would get the bdc recticle. pay no attention to what range the factory says the extra crosshairs are. go shoot and find out exactly what they are in your gun. i like being able to see a coyote at x range and know that is just a few yards past my x chrosshair
