First off I hope I have posted this in the right area.

So I have been reading countless forums here and other places and still haven't gotten an answer I can understand.

I have a 1998 Remington 700 PSS with a 26" barrel in .308. I have been shooting Federal Gold Match .168 BTHP. They have worked out fine but I am looking to get out past 1000 yards. Maybe 1100-1200 hundred. My barrel has a 1-12 twist.

With my length barrel and caliber in laymans terms. What would be most beneficial for me? .175 SMK or I was checking out Black Hills Gold .180gr. OR Hornady Palma A MAX .155gr?

I sort of get that barrel length and twist will help with accuracy and FPS. And the higher grain will give more velocity. Correct?

I am in the DFW area with an altitude of around 650 or so. Average humidity is 65 but it does vary.

Re: What weight of ammo for my 700 PSS .308

I had a great load for a Rem PSS using the Lapua 155gr Scenars, seems like a good bullet for the 1/12. Using 46.4gr of Varget (compressed load) and Lapua brass they were reaching 2905 fps and accuracy was slightly under 1 MOA. Second load that worked well was with 175gr SMKs and 44.0gr Varget in Lapua brass @ 2665 fps. The 175s grouped slightly better, but the 155s did a little better past 1K. One funny thing is the 155s stayed subsonic a little further but they did not do as well when they went transonic, they just didnt seem to make the transition as well as the 175s.

175 SMK should do the trick, or 155 Scenars. I would use a different powder than Varget for the 155's and get up to around 2900 fps. I like H4895 or or IMR8208XBR for the lighter projectiles.

178 hornady BTHP's and A-max, 175 SMK, 155 Lapua Scenar, anything Berger 155 and up... or if you really want to up your game 180 JLK long boat tail VLD. I use varget for 168 and heavier and imr8208 for 168 and lighter.

Re: What weight of ammo for my 700 PSS .308

I have a remmy 700 5r milspec. The twist is 1/11.25 and it is 24 inches long. This load I use has hit steel at 1400 yards.
Lapua brass 2.002 inches
federal 210m primers
44 grains of reloader 15
175 grain berger otm tactical (this bullet is designed to stay stabile in flight from supersonic to subsonic)
velocity from my ohler 35p is 2700 FPS average
my SD is around 8 fps on a 10 shot string
COAL 2.815

The only down side is Berger bullets are around $48.00 per 100. I mainly shoot hornady's 178 bthp. I increase the coal to 2.860 with the hornady's bullet(every thing else is the same. These run 28 bucks per 100. at 1000 yards my vertical correction is .2 mills more than the berger but the round is just as accurate

I have the same rifle.... 175 smk with 44.6 varget in winchester cases is extremely accurate and gett 2640. About .3 to .35 in my rifle.

I load to 2.830 coal as well.

So until I am ready to start learning to reload my own, any brand name match .175 grain is best for me? Cause it sounds to me like you guys are all loading your own. I am assuming 44.6 verget is a powder or something.
