Hunting & Fishing What yardage do you sight muzzleloader in at?

Re: What yardage do you sight muzzleloader in at?

Don't think you can go wrong with a 150 yard zero. Without knowing your load, that should translate roughly to 2" high at 100, on at 150 and 10" low at 200. Like I said, this is a rough estimate without knowing the specifics. A 150 zero will do all that you need to at reasonable impact velocity out to 200.

I sight mine in at 100 yds, using a 200 grain shockwave sabot over 100 grains of pyrodex. Not sure what ranges you'll be shooting at, but where I hunt here on the east coast you don't find a whole lot of places where you'll be able to take a shot over 100 yards.

Re: What yardage do you sight muzzleloader in at?

Really depends on your bullet weight and caliber. A lighter weight bullet will give you a higher velocity, but in a muzzleloader a heavier bullet will stabilize better and have less drop at longer distances. I use a 295 gr powerbelt with the aerotip. The BDC scopes are the best marketing ploy I've ever seen. They say a 150 gr load and 250 gr bullet... Ok, but they don't mention what bullet brand, what powder or what primer to use. All of which will determine your accuracy. The blackhorn powder kicks ass too and man is it clean!! Goodluck

But thats about the limit I want to shoot with a muzzleloader.
Most shots I take with them are 75 yards or less. I have an older Knight. </div></div>

^ This +1. Mine shoots great, but deffinately not a long-range rifle.

I sight mine in for 100 yards too. The furthest I've shot a deer with it was right at 139 yard, and I aimed right at the top of the back on it it. I've shot another one at approximately 120 yards with it, but most others have been around 100 yards or closer, so it works well for me.

I shoot 300 grain Speer Deep Curls in Harvester Crush Rib sabots and 100 grains of Pyrodex. I tried 150 grains and the gun hated it.

I used to shoot 295 grain Powerbelts, but realized the performance on deer was horrible, and you payed a premium price for it. I then found out about the Deep Curls which are about half the price, and perform 10x better on deer.

Re: What yardage do you sight muzzleloader in at?

I have sighted mine in at 100yd, 125yd, and 70 yd; mainly to stay about 2/3 of the way out to my longer shots under the expected conditions.

Here in the Northeast, cover and sight lines tend to make for shorter shots, and I've had my best success using the 70yd sight-in distance for all my Deer guns. These also includes 20ga Slug guns and a dot scoped .44 Mag '94AE Trapper Carbine lever gun.

I have a percussion sidelock with a 33" barrel, and use 295gr Powerbelts and 85gr of RS Select. Groups nice'n tight at 125yd. Not quite so bad on the shoulder, either. It has Buckhorns.

If I were shooting longer distances, I'd likely be using an inline, sabots, and heavier charges, but in close like I hunt, the 295's and moderate charges work well enough.

Unless it's M/L season, though; I stick with centerfire, and put my main faith in the lever gun.

I may try Triple Seven this year.

Re: What yardage do you sight muzzleloader in at?

I have a Traditions Pursuit and mine is sighted at 100 yrds with a 244gr Hornady bullet and Sabot. I have shot mine at 200 yrds with good accuracy. I would not be afraid to take a shot at a Deer at 200 yrds but no farther then that.

Re: What yardage do you sight muzzleloader in at?

I zero at 100 but have target knobs. So I do most of my shooting at 300 yards, frequently to 400 yards, and occasionally to 500 yards. if it's over 150yds I dial for exact range. 325gr FTX over 135gr 777 (1950fps) in my BP gun, or 200 Shockwave at 2780 fps out of my smokeless muzzleloader. Longest kill so far 338 yards with the BP gun, half a dozen over 300 and a bunch over 200. The buck I'm proudest of is probably the one I crawled a quarter mile across a field to shoot him at 20 yards though. Only shot the smokeless gun one season so far, one kill at 40 yds and one at 180ish.

From my Remington 700ML loaded with 250gr Hornady SST's on top of 150gr. of Pyrodex pellets with Winchester 209 primers, I have it sighted in +3" @ 100yds. It drops 9" @ 200.
