What's happening?

I took my 270 out today to try out some new loads. I had 6 loads to try, 5 rounds loaded of each load for a total of 30 rounds. I was attempting to get my seating depth dialed in so all of the loads were the same except for the depth. The load is as follows.

Win brass once fired and fully prepped.
52.5 gr Win 760
CCI BR-2 primers
Hornady 130gr SST bullets

When I started shooting these loads I noticed on some of them I could hear the firing pin hit the primer. I thought maybe the firing pin was hanging up so I stripped it, cleaned it, oiled it, and then put it back together. The problem didn't go away. Then I tried some of my older loads with IMR 4064 and they shot fine.

I kept shooting the new loads, now trying to figure out what was happening and I found that if I put the round into the chamber and then shook the whole rifle to settle the powder evenly in the casing it would shoot fine. If I just shoved the round into the chamber it would have a delay when I pulled the trigger.

My book doesn't say to use a magnum primer with this load but other than a bad primer or powder it's the only solution I can think of.

Let me know what you think, I'm open to suggestions.

I dont have my load book with me but I think Speer recomends magnum primers with Winchester ball powder. They were talking about some ignition problems. I've never had a problem with the AR loads but I've been using CCI magnum primers. It might be something to look into.

Your getting hang-fires due to poor ignition.
You need a hotter primer or a stick powder.

Note: If you switch to a hotter primer, adjust your powder charge accordingly.

What type of primer was used in the 4064 loads? Additionally, how full was the case with that charge of W-760?

Sounds like primer heat is the problem. I'd go Magnum as well or try WLR primers.

Were/are you sure that these cases were long enough in the sholder to allow the firing pin to fully strike the primer?

Yes-> use a magnum primer
No.-> don't push the sholder back so much and try experiment again.

I had a problem with hang fires and FTF where the primer actually ignited itself, but not teh powder. I was using BLC-2 in a 30-06 with CCI 200s

I switched to CCI 250's and have not had an issue for almost 5000 rounds.
