I finally got out shooting again and went to the DOW range near Buena Vista, CO yesterday evening. I had the place to myself…again, which was nice. I got my new Steiner sighted in/zeroed, gave it a workout, did some tripod shooting, and got some data on my 120 gr. Amax ammo. I shoot the 140’s a lot, but am running low, so I wanted to see what the 120’s would do. They worked out really well.
Tripod shooting...
I am wondering if someone here can help me with squeezing more data from what I got, i.e. – figuring out come-ups (in Mils) for other distances and muzzle velocity. I forgot my damn chronograph!!! I’m shooting Hornady factory 140 and 120 Amax 6.5 Creedmoor. Here’s what I got:
140
Yards Drop mils
0 0.0
540 -2.6
1020 -7.0
120
Yards Drop mils
0 0.0
475 -1.9
535 -2.4
550 -2.5
570 -2.7
600 -2.9
1020 -7.5
6.5 Creed on table, and Rem700 .22-250 on mat...whole range to myself!
Weather was mid to uppers 70’s, overcast, wind from 1 o’clock to 6 o’clock (shifty!) at 0 – 15mph, physical altitude was 7,500’ ASL. I’m using a 25” Bartlein barrel with 1:8.5 twist rate and a SAS Arbiter suppressor.
I had a first round hit on the gong at 1,020 yards with the 140’s based on what iSnipe told me. They have factory ammo pre-loaded.
This was my first range trip with the Steiner. I love this scope! I've never owned glass this good before. I was able to clearly see the bowling pins and 10" gong at 1,020 yards with overcast skies at ~7:00pm that are shaded by trees. The scope was a breeze to use and the zero stop set up couldn't be easier. The turret clicks were crisp and tight, stopping exactly where i wanted them to. The MSR reticle was nice too. I went here in the evening because I wanted to use it at distance in low light. It performed really well. I used the illumination too which was nice to have. In complete darkness, the entire reticle is lit, along with the fine milling scale and the fast milling scales. I cannot for the life of me get a camera to snap pictures when it's completely dark, but it looks awesome.
Gongs and pins at 1,020 yards, non illuminated. 7pm MST with overcast skies, targets in shade. Taken with a crappy iPhone.
Same as above, but illuminated. Taken with a crappy iPhone.
I even got some trigger time on my 20 year old .22-250 that I haven’t shot in years. I got a new scope for it back in May. It’s a Weaver 3-10x Tactical (I think) mil/mil. I got it zeroed and was getting hits out on the 1,020 yd gong too which was cool. I’ve never shot it that far before. iSnipe told me 7.6 mils to that distance which was right on shooting the 55 gr. Win soft points.
540yds = 2.0 mils, 570 yds = 2.2 mils, 600 yards = 2.5 mils and 1,020 yards = 7.6 mils.
Shooting off the tripod was fun. I definitely need more practice at this if I want to compete. I’m becoming too complacent on prone shooting! I am using an old camera tripod my pops gave me, and a homemade rest I constructed from a cut PVC pipe, duct-tape, iso mat and silicone glue. It worked well enough to get hits on a crow sized steel plate at 540 yards, but it was tricky. I shot off it from the sitting, kneeling and standing positions. See the vids if you’re interested.
Anyway, all in all it was a great trip to the range and I hope I don’t forget my chrono again! If anybody can plug my DOPE into a calculator and figure something out, that would be helpful. Thanks.
