Gunsmithing What's the shortest to go on a 7mm rem mag

Re: What's the shortest to go on a 7mm rem mag

A 7 Mag is designed for a 24" barrel. Since it's a magnum, you'll probably lose 15-30 fps per inch, depending on the bullet weight. And if you ever shoot prone, I wouldn't get a Vias brake. They are not fun when prone shooting, due to the dirt and debris it kicks up in your face.

Re: What's the shortest to go on a 7mm rem mag

a) I have converted a 1908 Mauser to 7mmRemMag that has a 23.5" barrel.
b) I have converted a 1908 Mauser to 7mmRemMag that has a 25" barrel.
c) I have converted a VZ24 Mauser to 7mmRemMag that has a 26" barrel.
d) I have a factory Ruger #1 in 7mmRemMag that has a a 26" barrel.

If I plug my 7mmRemMag hunting load [[70 gr Re22 [3.5% slow batch] 180 gr VLD moly 3.48"]] into Quickload and vary the barrel length, this is what I get, and the change in velocity with range:

32" 3164 fps
30" 3124 fps 0 yards
28" 3079 fps 30 yards
26" 3029 fps 60 yards
24" 2973 fps 100 yards
22" 2911 fps 140 yards
20" 2839 fps 190 yards
18" 2755 fps
16" 2657 fps

What does it all mean?
There is only 45 yards in difference between my barrel lengths for projecting power.

There is always a trade off between weight and accuracy and velocity. Long thin barrels are too inaccurate. Short barrels have low velocity. Long fat barrels are too heavy.
That is why the barrel makers offer 8 different tapers. You pay your money and take your choice. I am carrying hunting rifles between 9 and 11 pounds with scope, bi-pod, and sling. I am taking shots out to 500 yards. If I wanted to carry a 20 pound rifle for miles, I could take longer shots.

So give it a nice thick 32" barrel and then you don't need the brake

I've had five total and they were as follows;

3 were 24"
2 were 26"

I never knew the difference in the accuracy department but none were Target/Comp rifles. All shot lights out.
