What's your Fun (bolt action) Gun

Hey guys ok so let's say work has been rough wife kids and all that are being a PITA. You only have a couple of hours to go play, and you decide screw it im going to take my fun gun. The one that brightens your day no matter what always makes you grin. So what gun is that for you?

For me its a savage VLP .223 its super accurate and as heavy as it is there is no recoil at all!

Right now it'd be my Savage 10 Predator in 6.5cm or my Tikka CTR .260. I shoot them both suppressed so they have virtually no recoil, are nice and easy on the ears and I can push them about as far as I'd like to shoot.

I got some pretty nice long range, and practical bolt guns...but for fun...i like shooting my mosin nagant with iron sights...ever shoot at a 1000y gong with irons from a gun built in 1938...with cheap ammo lol its fun in its own way

Favorite bolt gun is a toss up between my custom 6mm Creedmoor and my Tikka 22-250 varmint.

The gun I always have a blast with is my Glock pattern 9mm SBR with a 5.5" barrel. Subsonic loads through the Octane 45 are ridiculous and im always amazed at how accurate it is.

I killed this coyote at 148 yards with a Hornady 135+P self defense round using the Aimpoint ACO. It was definitely a lucky shot and doubt that I can do it again.

Mine used to be a Rem 700 Varmint in .223 sitting in a B&C Varmint/Tactical stock... but I sold it to free up funds (and safe space) to go with a dual-barrel Tikka T3 that's in progress. The Tikka will have .223 Rem and .204 Ruger barrels, and live in a McMillan A5.

Until that one gets finished, the rifle that I find myself wanting to shoot the most is my .223 AR, though that may be because it's the most recent one that I played with, and I was finally able to get the gas block tuned.

But then again... on the other hand... well i do like this too.... and what about that one...

PCP air rifles are a lot of fun, low noise with a moderator attached, no recoil, accurate and plink till your body gets sore for a few bucks.

Ok, so it's not a bolt gun, but I have been having a ton of fun lately with a Henry Big Boy Steel lever gun in .41 Remington magnum. I love my precision bolt guns, but sometimes it's nice to just relax and not worry about all the intricacies of long rage precision shooting.

That being said, this thing is amazingly accurate. The pic below is 5 shots at 50 yards off sand bags; just a hair over 1/2 MOA. I bought if for hog hunting in brushy areas where shots are rarely over 100 yards and most are 50 yards or less. This thing pushes 210gr hollow points at 1750 fps, handles great, is fun as hell to shoot, only cost $679 and is damn near as accurate as some of my precision bolt guns out to 100 yds.

My #1 favorite fun gun. Trued 700, 24" Douglas 5A barrel chambered in .222 Rem Mag all sitting in a Holland varmint stock. Scope is Leo M8 12X with the target turrets and dot crosshair. 8208 sends a 50 grainer down range at 3,500 plus. Many hundreds of P. dogs and gophers to it's credit. Also has a Shilen trigger. It always works, always has.

My other fun gun is a Winchester Model 60. Shots 22 Short HP's like a house afire, my bunny slayer.

GAP Kopfjager, 260 for me....not that my family is ever a PITA....the mouthiest one, gets the worst kicking gun...down to what the angel gets what they want to shoot. If need be muzzle brakes come off, along weight that can be shed...its all about the experience, right!

Lately Practicing positional stuff/improvised positions like you wouldn't believe around the farm with my Savage MKII FVSR bedded in a Boyds tacticool. Nice and short, still heavy enough to be stable, can shoot super sonic hp's, sub sonic hp's, target ammo and cci quiet (which sounds like a bb gun).
Great practice for wind and holdovers. Around 10 mils elevation at 300y with supers. Great trainer rifle.

Best parts: super low noise, can shoot hundreds of rounds for little money in the fields behind the house, accurate as hell and takes care of the invading starlings and crows with no problem.

Even had a lucky Prarie dog headshot at 169y, didn't exit the head but he was DRT.
Now just need a can and I'll be in heaven.

Its at the gunsmith getting the pac nor barrel but the set up is:
CZ 527 in 20 vartarg with pacnor barrel and B&C stock.
With the chunky stock and the barrel it has the recoil of a rimfire and costs about the same to shoot if you compare it to quality match ammo.

Working on getting a 18" 6.5x47L built contemplating 16 but want to make sure i hit the velocity numbers i'm looking for with 123s. Probably going to be my go to rifle of choice for a while.

I really enjoy my 280 ackley. My ackley started out as your typical remington 700. When it was time for a new barrel I sent it off to have the action trued, re-barreled and chambered in 280 ackley (was originally 30-06). For a "bigger" cartridge it's actually quite mild to shoot. It's a fun rifle.

Stiller Tac 30 ,action with Jewell trigger,,8 twist Krieger .236 HV 28" 243 bbl with Vias brake ,throated for 105 VLDHs seated at 2.850,,mounted in an AICS 1.5 chassis with Atlas spigot mount and bipod,,8-32 Sightron SIII MOA-2 reticle on a Stiller 20 MOA base and mounted in the Barrett EX 15-40 adjustable taper rings,,,I can zero at 100 yards with the Barret mounts in the 15 taper slot and have 63 MOA of elevation from the 100 zero,,with the Barret rings in the 40 taper slot I have to dial down 5.5 moa for a 1,000 yard zero and have 68.5 moa elevation from a 1,000 yard zero,,

I have to say it is a blast to shoot and also have a 6.5x47 bbl I can switch on it that is maybe a little more fun past 1,000 but to 1,000 the 243 bbl is just a blast,,

The big drawback of course is it eats barrels like nobody's business.

I did. A Weatherby rifle chambered in 340 Weatherby mag that weighed about 6.5 pounds, no muzzle brake. Not the least bit fun to shoot unless you are a total masochist.

Inaccurate and unreliable are unfun to me, sloppy fit and finish seem to be joined at the hip with those at the same time - frustrating and a money pit. But I know what you mean.

Mossberg MVP Predator .223 10rd AR mags. Bushnell 3-12x40 223 AR Drop Zone BDC scope. Harris style bipod. Simmons LRF600. Rounds on target with the least muss and fuss, better than plinking and less stressful than match shooting. Thinking about the 308 version with the 4.5-18x40 308 AR drop zone BDC reticle.

The one I love to shoot the most is a 22 Creedmoor. Pull the trigger and the gong is moving at 600 before the recoil starts. I just can't figure out why I like that one so much when I have so many others to shoot but I just smile as I pull the trigger.

Sand warrior please tell me more about your 6-284 that barrel looks huge!

It's a Shilen barrel that was pretty much left almost unturned. The action is a VZ-24. It's dropped into a high rollover comb curly maple target stock that I glass bedded with Acra-Glass. It was a Pine City student's project as he went through gunsmithing school. When I first got the rifle, it wasn't all that accurate. The first thing I did was dig out his bedding job. Because there is a lot of wood thickness, I hogged extra out. I completely surrounded the recoil lug. That brought groups from 1.5" (I know, OMG!) to a more realistic .75". Throat erosion had already occured, so the barrel went from 28" to 26". While not a lot of erosion, my gunsmith wanted to start with good rifling. At about 1200 rds., it got set back another 2". Again, at about 1200 rds., Another 2". This is the last time it's getting set back.

I've been loading it back a fair amount. And, no more sitting all day over a p-dog/Gopher town. My current load is about 1/2 to 2/3 down on the load range from max. It's still faster than a .243. So far a lot less barrel wear. I did have it out shooting silhouettes at Raton. All the way out, consistently, to the buffalo with 87 gr. V-Max's..

I like my 6.5 creed RPR for just throwing in the truck and banging around. No worries about putting a tiny scratch or any of that stuff, just get cheap ammo and bang the crap outta steel. Or whatever.

Something to to be said for a lower priced, accurate out of the box weapon.

second on the,list of fun is the Barrett M107A. No explanation needed. It's just loud, obnoxious and puts big holes in stuff. What's not fun about that?

I used to own a 541-S and a 541-X (neither of which I wanted to sell...'nuther story) which both shot fantastic. The only thing I'd change about them was the triggers. Well, maybe smooth the bolt out some, but working them more would have done that. I gotta say, I really loved them.

All of my guns are fun, but as far as a "s**ts and giggles" riot to shoot, I love my R700 .223 trainer that mimics my 6.5 match rifle. Smacking little plates at 600 yards with that dinky little .223 always brings a smile to my face.

I have a Savage 93R17 with a decent stock and glass. Accurate and a hoot to shoot. I also have a surplus K98 with some cheap glass thats also accurate and cheap. Both are great when things arent serious.

I normally shoot Palma style over all ranges with a single shot .308, it's amazing as a rifle and I love the discipline but contorting myself into a jacket, sling around the rifle occasionally feels like too much effort, especially if you have a heavy summer sun on your back.

For fun and still competitive instances I pull out a my Tikka .260 in KRG stock, NF NXS and 26" Tru-flute barrel.

Though im thinking a .223 would fill this niche very nicely.
