Range Report Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

24" Savage
175 SMK
Lapua Brass
Fed 210
43.5 Varget
2680 FPS

I have no idea how I get that speed. I wouldn't believe my chrono but Ballistic FTE puts me dead on at 600 for that speed.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

I run 44 grns of Varget and I get 2725-2790 fps depending on the time of year. My barrel however is a 25" Krieger. In my experience custom barrels tend to be slightly higher on the velocity side that factory ones.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Thanks for the replies, I am using win brass.

I should add, that I havent chronod this load. I shot at a bunch of varying distances, recorded my dope, then plugged a velocity into a ballistics program, and worked it backwards 2605 is what I got, that matches my trajectory.

Is this wrong? I figured it would be fine, being as they match each other, but could my velocity still be different? This has been fine to 750yds (farthest I have driven it out too).

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Savage 10FP 26" pipe
45.4 gr. of RE15 2678fps @ 17 deg. C

Hit the wall at 45.4, went on to 46.0 gr. of RE15 in .2 increments with virtually no increase in velocity.

Your over 1k ft higher than me, when I did this it was in the 40s I think. With around 50% humidity and my dens alt hovers around 1550, normally.

Thanks, glad to know I'm in the ballpark. Will u stay supersonic to 1k?

Sounds find to me. Every rifle is different. The strange part of my load development with varget and the 175gr BT LR is, that i never got a huge jump in velocity even at 45gr. At 43.5gr only 3 shots chronoed, got errors on 2. But i got 2602, 2602, and 2597. Then 44 2617,2618,2613,2623, and 2624. Increase on assumption per .5grains seemed around 20-50fps. When i got to 44.5 it was around 2635-2640. And at 45 only hit 2700 once most were around 2680. I was expecting more of a jump i guess. I know varget is very stable as far as temperature goes but i imagine environmentals will add a bit of a differenc also.

For where i am, right now in the summer with the humidity and temp being high everyday estimations from JBM is reading 1255fps @ 1000yds. When i first started this load in early winter going on spring i was getting estimations around 1206fps @ 1000yds.

About two months ago I decided to find out what 6" of barrel length would yield with identical loads fired in both of my Remington’s, one 20" tactical and one 26" varmint. Here is what I found, FWIW...

Remington SPS Tatical20"
175smk 44.5 varget load @ 2.825oal = 2550fps
155 lapua scenar varget 46.7 load @ 2.825 = 2750fps

Remington Varmint 26" same loads as above.
175 = 2645
155 = 2850

So in these two factory rifles you gain ~100 fps from those extra 6" of factory barrel. I also have a 21" rock creek custom that matches the 26" factory barrel velocities so it does make a difference on what you are comparing.

Too slow for what?<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: ubet</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I have a Rem 5r 308win, and am getting right around 2605fps, 44.3gr varget, ccibr2 175gr smk, is 2605fps to slow? </div></div>

To slow, as compared to what others are getting with the close to the same load, but apparently I am in the ball park.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Your velocity seems a little slow. I'm using exactly the same gun.

Federal Brass
Winchester large rifle primer
43.0 grains of Varget
175 SMK
Velocity 2626 fps from a Pact mark 4 chronograph/timer.

Ran out of 175 SMK's before I got to 44 grains.

What is your da, temp, and humidity, just curious.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

When I had my 308:

175SMK
Win brass
CCI BR2
43.2 Varget
22" bartlein 1-11.25
2690FPS

Normal conditions 2-4K DA, 90 degrees, low humidity.

correction, sorry guys checked my loading book and im actually runnin 42.5 grains of imr4064 to get that velocity. real temp stable tho.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Not chrony my handloads yet until I shoot all my factory ammo, but with a 22" GAP ROCK, getting 2695 for 4 shots of match 175smks...

Dont think the vel really matters esp if you found a real accurate node...anywhere in the 2600's would be acceptable to me.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

AI-AW 24" 1:12
Black Hills brass
43.5 Varget
F210M
2.810" COAL
2630 @ 800' ASL 90F

The barrel can run faster, but this is a very nice accuracy node.

Same load runs 2700 fps in a 25" Krieger 1:11 chambered by Mike Lau.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Savage 10FP
24" Barrel
Lapua Brass
175 SMK
45.5 Varget
2656fps indicated by chrony
2730fps calculated based on actual trajectory from 200-750 yards

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

24 inch savage 1/10 twist
46.4 gr power pro 2000 mr
CCI LR primers
Winchester brass
.015 off the lands
2776 fps average of ten rounds at 81 degrees at 11 feet
.5-.75 moa (but I'll be working on the action screws a bit this weekend, hopefully tighten that up), and best part is over a grain under max, nothing even close to a pressure sign!

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Some great information in here! I am not a handloader so the only relevant info I have is SW's 175smk, thru a factory Savage 1:12 30" barrel and cheapo $70 wally world chrono...average 2770fps. I have no idea what their load specs are.
In hindsight I wish I would have had a chance to shoot them at longer yardages and back calculate the fps.

This. I too run a 25" barrel, but mine is a Bartlein 5R (match barrel). I load 44.4gr Varget under 175gr SMK in Lapua brass with CCI BR2 primer, seated to 2.820". I manage between 2720fps when cold, to 2770 fps when warm.

That sounds too slow. I use 175g SMK over 44.0g of IMR 4064. In my Rem 700 LTR w/ 20" bbl I average 2670 fps MV. That's been verified on two different chronys (different brands).
