Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Before I switched to Varget and the Berger 185 LRBT, I was getting right at 2700 with 43grs. of RL15 Lapua Brass and the 175 SMK's in a tight bore custom 26" .308. Be careful with RL15 in hot temps. That's one of the reasons I switched to Varget.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

In my opinion, the chrono makes this all a trivial comparison. My 308 load was
Rem 700 VSS 26" 1:12 with T2K brake
Winchester new brass
FGMM 210M primers
175 SMK
45.6 g RL-15
best load was 2637 fps

Sold barrel to another hide member. He put it on an identical action and it is over 2700 fps. He is shooting thru different chrono but same elevation and simular conditions. The cheap chrono's variances can really cause the numbers to be off. In order to compare, use the same load thru the same chrono in different rifles. Wish there was a solid reliable chrono at a good price.

I run a bolt gun, 17.5" Brux 4 groove. The ammo I run is Andrews ammo from McCourt Munitions and loads from a Surgeon bottom metal with Aics mags at 2.86 COAL if I'm not mistaken.

I don't know details on the load but I got 2529 average velocity when I chrono'd it that morning in 45-48 degree weather. It was pot on that day until later in the after noon when it began reacing upper 60's and had to back my elevation down at just about every target so with it warming up Im sure I saw 2545-2550 based on my elevation adjustments.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

I shoot through a 26" barrel. im using 43.5 grains varget and my average velocity on the chronograph last weekend was 2679fps.

My load is as follows:

Federal Once Fired brass,

trimmed to: 2.0065
COAL: 2.815
Bullet: 175gr SMK weight sorted
Powder: 43.5 grains varget trickle charged
Primers: CCI200 large rifle primers
Avg Speed: 2,679 fps

this load is shooting one ragged hole groups at 100 yards. The average speed was calculated after a string of 20 rounds fired. Im shooting a Remington 700 PSS with a 26 inch barrel.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

I am getting around 2500 fps out of my 18” AR-10 using SW ammo (175 precision), how does that compare to what you guys are getting with the same ammo?
Temp = 70
Humidity = 57
Baro = 30
Altitude = 1K

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Reading all y'alls data makes me wonder what's up with the lot of Varget I had. I have a 10lbs of a new lot that I haven't started into yet, going to load some up and shoot it this weekend to make sure it's the same as the last. Here's my load data;

McGowen 20" 1:10

Winchester brass
175 Nosler HPBT @ 2.800"
CCI200 Primers

46.5gr Varget. Gives me pretty much 2650. I don't put stock in Chronos, I shoot 2 or 3 ranges and calculate it and extrapolate the drop data for the load. The rifle shoots whatever I put through it well. I once did some testing of 178 amax's with a powder charge variation of 3 grains in .3gr increments and all the groups were within .050" of the same size. POI shifted around the paper, but it just shot them all great.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Winchester brass, Tula 7.62 primer, 24" bartlein, 2.800", 44.8 Varget gives me 2680-ish, verified to 1000. Very accurate.

Re: Whats your velocity for 175smks?

Almost forgot:

Altitude: 650 ft ASL.
Baro pressure: 29.62
Relative humidity: 20%
temp: 63.8 F
Time: 2:10 pm CST.

Federal 1x fired brass trimmed to 2.0065
Primer: CCI 200 large rifle primers
Powder: Varget, 43.5 grains
COAL: 2.815
Avg Speed: 2,679 fps

Shot 20 rounds @ 100 yards, 4 groups. Shot through a rem700 police, w 26" barrel. group size was 1/3 moa.
I live in the Midwest. Hope this helps out some
