Maggie’s What's Your View II

Ah 168... you may be wrong on that 'Fedex' theory. Looks like he done fetched it himself.

So that's the way it's gonna be huh? I got like 3 of these things running around the place right now. Suppose to only be one as a "Gag" joke. And I'm not turning the cardboard into the recycle center. Ain't happening. The Burn Ban ain't helping either.

Bro, that tree is one of the toughest/densest SOBs I've ever tackled. I cut some 30" Ash in Chicago and it was a cakewalk compared to that oak. My redneck buddy who helped me carry it off was listening to my Husqvarna 455 bogging down and told me to sharpen the chain. I told him that I started the day with a brand new chain and he thought I was lying. The intermediate rounds were a solid 2-man lift to get them in my truck. I pulled a smaller round out of the pile yesterday to see if it would split. I smashed it with an axe and made it an inch deep and it just spit water back at me. For the first time in my life I'm contemplating the purchase of a log splitter, which really rubs me wrong because manual splitting is my "therapy".

The "good" news is that I salvaged a good portion of that wrecked shed to use as a cover for the split wood once it's done.

I know exactly what ya mean Brother Bogey. At some point it comes down to working smarter and not harder right? 2 guys and a splitter can buzz thru cord after cord of some pretty bad rounds. Leaves plenty of time for liquid therapy...... :p

If tucker doesn't Photoshop that with either a dick or a dildo replacing the thumb I will be disappointed.

Thompson Center Compass from Gander Mountain going out of business sale $175. For my seven year old son. Just need to chop the stock. 308 she's a keeper.

from personal experience unless you think he won't get any bigger I wouldn't. At least without a replacement stock in hand. Just saying as he grows he will out grow it and then it will be a closest/safe queen. but nice shooter for sure!!

I have three sons he's the oldest. Seven, three and 4 months. Under $200 for a 308 bolt gun we'll get a good return on the investment . Couldn't wipe the grin off his face this afternoon. Looking forward to deer season

Fair enough. I have the fist gun my father gave me. Really the only one. He cut an 1 1/2 off the stock 40 years ago. And now it just sits in my safe. Tons of memories but useless to me. I eneded up way bigger than average for my family. I could actually use over 2 inches put back on.
I handle it from time to time. It is like holding my daughters cricket 22 from 15 years ago.

Splitting as therapy is ok as a hobby. But, as 1J04 eluded to, hydraulics are your friend when faced with large quantities or tough to split species. Set aside the straight/clean stuff to work by hand. Let the hydro's handle those nasty crotch pieces. I split and use every last piece we bring home from the timber. I wouldn't be able to do that without a good splitter. Take it from an 53 year old, work smart and sit by a fire without pain.

I hear you. About 20 years ago a freak storm blew in from the NE and knocked down thousands of mature trees in mid-Michigan. Many people just wanted them off their lawn so I took some vacation from the day job and spent 2 weeks cutting and hauling. Mostly red oak, a little hickory and one 5' diameter white oak from hell. It had crotches about every 5' so you never got out of cross-grain bullshit. I had a good hydro but it couldn't touch this mother. I ripped it with my old chain saw. That stuff would burn forever. Got about 60 full cords (not face) in that 2 weeks, walked like an old man for 2 more weeks. Just finished burning the last of it this year.

Just noticed Tucker's reason for editing. LOL indeed.

I'm with y'all. Now that I'm home that splitter is way overdue, I'm just stubborn and having a serious discussion with myself about whether to rent one, which I hate doing, or just bite the bullet and buy one and be done with it.

For those of y'all who know about splitters, what's the "smallest" that's worth considering? 7ton seems to be about average, on up to 20ton. What do I get with the bigger machine in practical terms? It seems idiotic for me to get a splitter to handle the shit I can't manually split, only to have the machine be underpowered also.

Have you looked at the "flywheel" splitters vs Hydraulic? I don't own a splitter but a few months ago this same type of subject came up here and a couple people posted videos of the Flywheel splitters and they looked fast. All I remember was the the "DR" brand was not built that good according to how the thread went. There are other brands of that style though. Uses a lot less gas also.

I remember that discussion and looked at the recommended model that someone had posted about. It certainly looks like a huge improvement over the hydraulic models, but when I priced them the used ones I found were still out of my price range. If I were trying to make a living at this I could justify one, but this largely for my personal use and maybe some side jobs for friends.

I searched for that splitter we were talking about, it's the Super Split. I was wrong in my previous post: I can't afford a new one and they basically don't exist on the used market. However, I've found some resources for building one, so if I lose the rest of my mind that may be an option

Fair enough. This would be easy to build if you could find a trashed car.

Flow rate = speed i.e. Gallons per minute of what the hydraulic pump can produce. This equals faster cycle times. Pressure = splitting force i.e. Splitting those nasty crotch pieces into something viable.

For what its worth, I use a 34 ton Brave. Tonnage is higher than I need, but I've not run across much that it just flat won't split. I've always said, a guy should have knowledge and experience splitting by hand prior to running a hydraulic splitter. That knowledge gained the hard way makes life smoother and easier when using a hydro. You have that knowledge. You will enjoy letting fluid under pressure work for you.

www.arboristsite.com is the Hide for wood boogers like us. Go to the "Firewood/Wood Burning" section. Good folks there with sound advice. Just my opinion, but we do a little wood processing here from time to time ;-)

Hey Bogey, oneshot86 uses a inertia type splitter in his business and my be worth shooting him a PM. I know he likes it for the speed, but I don't know how well they perform on the "angry" pieces.

Just for kicks, another view of some of my stash...

IMG_0920.JPG

Great info as usual tnichols. I've actually been spending some time on that arborist forum going through old threads. If I were processing 1% of the wood that you are then I could justify any splitter I wanted. That "stash" gave me a pyromania boner.

IIRC oneshot86 is down in central Florida. I've got a trip coming up to the Tampa area and may see if I could stop by and check out that Super Split in action. I see now that some of the big box stores are now offering cheaper versions of flywheel splitters. Again it just comes down to power, because i need one for stuff I can't do manually, so a machine that can't do it either is just pointless.

Again, my inner pyro is drooling over that stash of yours.

any time brother, always welome here,we are super close to airport, i have and will have plenty of wood, i split year round, i will send over a pic to a1j what it looks like out front now, maybe he could throw it up...
brother T, you have the best looking stash, georgous and great job

Thanks man, I appreciate that. I'll be driving down to Tampa/Lakeland area from South Alabama, so if you're north of Tampa you'd be on my way.

As a proper redneck I have a car in my backyard that was running before the dogs buried it. Also a front wheel drive like that guy's, but as cool as that setup is I'm getting rid of the dead car. I wonder if a stand-alone gas engine could power it?

Got it. Post up in a few minutes. ;)

Bogey, go big brother. Just go big.

Thanks man, but I'm dealing with a new swimming pool liner, a new roof on the house, some Tractor work in the yard, and more St Augustine sod than I want to think about, all without a paycheck. So if money were no object I'd just buy the biggest baddest mofo out there. Unfortunately I need to find the middle ground for a backyard homeowner vs a commercial operation.

Copy that Brother. I know what ya mean. I'm lucky to have access to 3 of them so I don't gotta take that plunge. Lucky to have friends that are closer than some family. We just take care of each other. Usually don't like borrowing squat. But we have a good understanding. Goes shitbag on your watch, you fix it. We're good with that.
Now, when the wife gets done with one of her online courses I'll get OneShots pic up before I head out into the world. ;) Have a great day guys!

Okay Mike. Neither of these "Splitter's" are funny. Geezus you're a sick wack job. :p Now stop sending me this nasty stuff. ;)

Bogey,
if you're open to it, I'd also like to meet up with you and Mike.
I'll buy the first round.
Oh, BTW, I don't think the rubber splitter works for shit.
Or, maybe that's how it's designed...

Sounds great man. I'm actually looking at next weekend. I just got some work this week, some easy dog work for cash, so once we figure out all the moving parts I'll let y'all know.

Plus, when you're processing firewood, as my dad used to say, "It gets you warm more than once". ;)

Nothing particularly special, but from the wee hours of this morning. My gf and I spent the evening across the Bay introducing her to some of my friends. Great evening of food and conversation that ended a little early because they had church this morning. We weren't ready to be done for the night so I shook the rain water off of some green rounds and split them up in the dark. I used half a box of old confidential documents and a precious few pieces of my aged stuff to get a fire going in the backyard. We just sat around in the dark with a fan going, fire blazing, and her playing guitar and singing to me. An awesome evening with my lady.

I love this time of summer... Schloss Nitrocellose is at its most tidy. Just mowed about 1/3rd of the fields today. Laid out some new rows for the growing vineyard. And am relaxing with a nice IPA on the deck. 75 degrees, zero humidity and sunny. Life is good!
