When you fire a round through the can, one of the byproducts is moisture. Don't take the can off and oil it, and your crown and first inch or so of the barrel will pit with rust over time. </div></div>
Huskey said the same thing, so I've always removed mine. If I want to leave it on the rifle, I take it off for a while to make sure any gasses have dispersed from the can before putting it back on. The theory doesn't make sense to me, though- the barrel and can should stay too warm to allow condensation long after the moisture-bearing gasses have drifted away. I'm interested to see so many people not removing their cans, with apparently no ill effects.
