Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

I'm looking for a Surgeon 1086/R long action for my custom rifle build, however they state on their website that they are all back ordered. Where's a good place to order one?

Also this is my first custom bolt action so what's the normal procedure: gather all the parts from MidwayUSA/Brownells/Barrel Maker XYZ and then ship them to a gun smith, or have a gun smith order them for you? Can you recommend a Smith to me that specializes in these actions? I understand that wait times can be variable--my goal is to have this rifle done by next fall.

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

Try bug holes but I think no matter what a 1086 is going to be hard to find.

Probably the fastest is to buy a gun from surgeon If you have to have a 1086

I would try a defiance deviant if I were buying an action tomorrow.

I pick my smith first see what they might have on hand or extra parts ordered. If you want a gun by the fall you need to make a deposit and get parts ordered pretty quick.

Why not call jered at Apa and see what he can do for you. Always treated me right. Not sure what you have in mind build wise he had some 300 win mags for sale earlier.

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

Depends,

I prefer to get the parts myself.

Surgeon actions are not available at the 4-5 retailers that normally carry them. You might call Surgeon directly.

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

Robert Gradous builds his rifles exclusively on Surgeon actions. I suggest you give him a call. He's great to talk to and highly regarded on this site. GAP and Surgeon Rifles are good choices also.

If you want a gunsmith to do a full rifle build, you may have to wait on parts. If you collect all the parts and send them off you may get your build done quicker, depending who you use.

Southern Precision Rifles often has barrels and stocks in stock; sometimes actions too.

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

If you don't have to go Surgeon and would consider a Stiller or Pierce, give Accurate Ordnance a call. I spoke with them today and they have a variety of stocks on hand. I am sending them a barreled action and some parts and then they are providing other parts. You might even ask them if they can get a Surgeon... I couldn't find the muzzle brake I wanted and Mark found one in about an hour. They have a solid reputation on the Hide.

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

Is the recent talk about banning AWs causing shortages in the bolt action sector? Defiance also shows very little inventory. I think I am going to stick with a surgeon action.

Thanks for the advice on the builders. What do builders normally charge to assemble a rifle from supplied parts? I see that Robert Gradous charges $1250, while I've seen other websites that charge $300. Is there a lot of work that goes into assembly? Or is it all barrel work (chambering, threading, crowning)? I apologize for my ignorance as I'm used to the AR world where everything is built to spec so it goes together like legos with just a few simple tools you can buy from Brownells.

Does anyone have any resources (or point me in the right direction) on what smithing work goes into a build? This understanding would also better help me when discussing the build with these vendors.

Thanks

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

Robert Gradous' assembly charge includes everything. If you want a rifle built with a Surgeon action, I would call him or Surgeon Rifles.

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

Called surgeon direction and they are on indefinite backorder.

How do the Deviant actions compare? The big seller for me are the 20 MOA integral scope rails. Anyone know a good vendor for them? (They don't show any as available on their website).

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

Deviant actions are only available in medium actions at this time - long actions are coming in a couple of months.

I called & talked to Defiance a day ago - I was looking into a Deviant long action myself.

Defiance makes to-notch stuff - no worries here!!

Lowlight and another gentleman on here have posted a build threat of there build with Robert Gradous. Frank even did a video which is on the front page of the hide I think. He does a lot more than just chamber and thread a barrel. It's a good watch. It's the little steps that make the difference between a great rifle and a rifle of a lifetime.

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

Most standard builds will include:
Chambering
crowning and threading
timing the brake if that's in your build
assembling
finishing
inletting the stock if required
bedding
trigger install/ adjustment
test fire...
that's the big stuff.
$300 for a full build doesn't sound right. $1250 for Robert Gradous is a great deal, as his work is top tier.

If you are looking for an integral long action, you can check out the BAT Tactical action as well.

Re: Where to buy Surgeon Actions?

Thanks Easy E but I am looking for the repeater with a 308 bolt face because this will be for a .284 cartridge.

I appreciate all the input guys, I am learning as I go along here. Will comb through the build thread!
