I agree with this.

While high-end, tricked-out 1911s wearing all the Match foo-foo are fine for standard competitions, I'd save some cash and go with a "no-frills" basic 1911 for 3-gun. I have a "beater" 1911 that is surprisingly accurate and would aquit itself well as a blaster for 3-gun or even as a sidearm during tac carbine classes. It's dehorned but otherwise stock - e.g., fixed GI sights & no "match" anything on it.

And there you have it! I didn't know the constraints of the rules.

Any reliable 45acp 1911 sounds like it will fill the bill.......

Re: which 1911 for 3Gun?

i've run uspsa 3-gun for a few years and have a couple 1911's. i know people are poo-pooing kimber and match stuff but here's my 2 cents. i have a kimber team match and it has "match" components. adjustable rear sight and a fiber optic front make you very fast on the target. ambi safties are great when weak side is required and your not trading hands with a gun off safe. a flared magwell is going to speed up and make your reloads more reliable. extended beavertail with memory pad is going to help prevent loss of grip safety. and so on. if you want to run a concealed carry style gun just realize you will be at a big disadvantage. as for carry with the so-calleed "match" gun, if i carry exposed, i carry my "match" gun, i have the most practice with it and i will beat you draw, target and reload against your concealed gun.

Just get an STI Spartan and lots of mags.

Re: which 1911 for 3Gun?

I am far from an expert on many things on this site, but 1911s and handguns is for sure my specialty. It is hard to say which gun fits you best, but i will give you my advice based on 100s of 1000s of rounds. Yes, well over 100,000 a year. The SA Loaded is hard to beat for the money, if you dont mind spending a little more, the TRP is excellent. You ask about the external extractor S&W, they are fine pistols and trouble free. You will hear MIM parts mentioned. Well, I have right at 100,000 thru my SA 1911 9mm and probably over 120,000 thru my SA 1911 Loaded model 45ACP that I am currently shooting. I have replaced a firing pin stop and firing pin on the 9mm and the barrel bushing only on the 45. They get my vote. There are fancier guns, but for $750, you wont find a better deal than the Loaded. All they need is a trigger job, springs for lighter loads and a fitted barrel bushing to make them tack drivers.

Re: which 1911 for 3Gun?

After struggling with the Charles Daly on the longer, small, pistol targets in my last two Multi-gun match attempts (e.g. 5X5" sg steel @ 20 yards), I'd like to revise my recommendation.

While the CD has been and still is 100% reliable (I can not recall a single FTF/FTE/jam, etc.), it just doesn't have the necessary accuracy for those type of shots. Sighting before and after the March match, it was shooting a "little left" before the match, and hitting a "little right" after the match. Not sure quite when that "switch" happened. Rear sight would drift with little effort, so I tightened up the fit and thought I had it ready. Last match still had trouble on the long little ones, though rear sight is still holding tight.

This was my new criteria - 45 ACP, 5" barrel, adjustable sights. Picked up a Trojan 5.0 on Monday, and it is like night and day compared to the CD. There is no perceptible play in frame/slide fit on the STI, the CD has probably 1/32" side-to-side at the dustcover. I only did one quick 5-rd live fire comparison that night, but the STI put 4/5 in 2" @ 25 yds right on POA (4" overall), the CD did about 8". I plan to do a little more comparison tonight.

The CD is great for up close and/or big, but those small, distant, targets may frustrate you, as they did me on Sunday.

Cheers,

Bill

Re: which 1911 for 3Gun?

spend the dough, get a caspian built up using a matching lower and slide, then put the parts you want on it, adjustable sights and what not, something along the lines of

WRM-That was definitely the most expeditious way to fix the Daly. I think the Trojan's are the best choice for a single stack for anyone under M/GM for the money. When the shooter can shoot the difference, then step up to full personal build cost.

VaJayJay-that is a beautiful trophy, but I'd hate to hear the cost tally of the training and time it took to win it!

I was thinking the same thing earlier - if I shoot enough Multi-Gun matches, that STI will pay for itself in ammo savings!

That Caspain site does look like the way to go to build exactly what you want.

Thanks,

Bill

I dig that Caspian!

BTW, it's called "multigun" now, not 3 gun anymore. They used to be separate things (3 gun had stages with all three at separate times, multi gun had multiple within one stage), but they are the same now. Some stages will be multi gun in most matches, and some will use only one gun.

Let's see, these are just off the top of my head.....

3 Gun Nation
Rocky Mountain 3 Gun
Ozark 3 Gun Championships
Ft. Benning 3 Gun Challenge
Blue Ridge Mountain 3 Gun Championship
FNH USA Midwest 3 Gun Championships
Superstition Mountain Mystery 3 Gun Championship

Once again you and your attempt to educate us with your terminology lesson meets with failure....you just never learn.

To the OP there has been alot of good brands suggested but the following put a lot of support into 3 Gun matches and practical shooting in general....I like to support them.

STI
S&W
Springfield Armory
Caspian (if building)
Sig Sauer

I have a Springfield MC Operator just like that, but I never use it, so I'm putting it up for sale...
