Which .308?

Hi,
I'm interested in getting started in LR shooting. Right now I'm looking at 3 possibilities for the rifle (.308). Sako TRG 22, Blaser tactical 2 or the Steyr SSG 08. Cost is not a big deal and I like quality , dependable equipment so only I'm to blame for failures! Any and all recommendations will be appreciated. The local range goes to 600yds but when I get some level of proficiency I'd like to reach out further. I'd like to stick with .308 for the availability of good factory ammo and I have 3 other AR based .308s on order.

Re: Which .308?

Pity the fool. Oops, wrong character.

Doc, use the SEARCH function. Log in, click 'advanced' in the SEARCH utility, and then set the date range to "newer than one year".

Search in the 'Rifles' forum. Your question has been asked about umpteen billion times.

For key words, use the rifle models you're contemplating. And try Google too. You'll find more than a few opinions about them.

Thanks Nate,
I'll keep searching and reading (this is a great forum btw). Sorry about being the annoying newb who though his question had probably been asked only a few million times......not billions!!!

Sounds like you're approaching this the same way I did. I wanted a platform that I could "grow into" and blame any issues on the shooter rather than the equipment. After a fair bit of research, I ended up buying a Remington 700 5R; other rifles considered were a Savage 10FP and Tikka T3. Needless to say, the 5R is much more accurate than I am (have only been doing precision shooting for a year) however it's nice to know that when the rifle becomes the bottleneck, I have tons of aftermarket options for improving the hardware.

If cost is not a big deal and you like quality and reliability, then you may want to consider Accuracy International AW, or AE as an option. It is utterly reliable even in the most abusive and harsh environment. All that plus accuracy too. (Shit! I sound like a rep for AI, which I am NOT BTW). Talking from experience. I have two of them. Both are extremely accurate out of the box (if you don't mind the long wait and the high price). BTW Doc!. Please fill out your profile and Welcome to the Hide

Re: Which .308?

Thanks guys,
Great input. Now I have even more choices! (Probably not a good thing for a newb). Added Remington 700, custom shops and the Nemesis mini-windrunner (came across it searching) to the list.

Start off with one of these, train up, shoot alot, develop YOUR shooting preferences. Once you've been around, and learned more about the custom stuff available:

1) Sell off your stock setup for something that fits your needs better
2) Use the receiver for a custom build after you've shot the original barrel to death
3) Slowly upgrade your stock rifle to suit your needs if you are a do-it-yourselfer

Re: Which .308?

If your shooting long range is it going to be at a local gun range with easy access or are you going to have to hike in to a shooting spot. This might help me decide on what rifle I would get.
A.I'S are great rifles, robust and can take a lot of abuse. Custom builds can be lighter for packing in to your fav shooting spot.
Look at your needs and this will help with your final choice.

Good point Mac,
Most will be at the range. The mini-windrunner would be great for packing in.
