Which 6mm for longer range?

Hey guys,

New to 6mm and coming from 6.5mm. Which cal should I chamber my new rifle in? Want to use a higher bc, heavier bullet but open.

Want precision from 100-1200+ yards. Might use it in some basic local compitions. Like to target shoot steel and paper and be as accurate as possible.

Was maybe thinking 6creedmoor because I like the lapua brass offering but open to alpha.

Prob be on a manners prs2, deviant, med or heavy palma, longer barrel.

If you want to keep it simple there is absolutely nothing wrong with the good old 243win in a 26" fast twist barrel and you can still have your Lapua brass.
The 6mm Creedmoor is a damn good one as well just haven't used one yet only reading about and may give it a go after my 243win barrel is toast.
I'm sure since you brought up 6mm someone won't be able to resist a new hotness joke.

The 6mm's avg that I've seen are around 1500-1800. My buddies 6 Creed went over 1 moa accuracy at 1650ish

6brx or another variant of the 6br case gets the nod from me. Great barrel life. Inherently accurate. Good velocity. Next up is the 6slr and 6xc. The slr would be the fastest of the 3 mentioned. Better barrel life than a 243 due to the longer neck which helps mitigate fire cracking of the barrel.

1500-1800 rounds through the barrel. Most 6mm cartridges are running 2950-3100 fps.

That doesn't mean you can't continue to shoot it, but it's where most see accuracy start to fall off. You could get one that goes 2000+ or you could get one that only goes 1300. Depends on how you load your ammo (hot) vs factory and how hard you run it.

My 6mm build should be back Any day and I went with 6mm creed. Originally thinking 6x47 lapua but when lapua offered 6mm creed brass, then alpha I figured it was a no brainer. Kelbly atlas tac, bartlein 1:7.5 medium Palma finished at 27”, manners t5, tt diamond trigger and heathen brake.

It's all depended on what you want and how fast you want to push your load.
The 6 creed is about the fastest with the least amount of work to shoot.
If you run any load up near it's max, you will burn any barrel sooner than later.
I've run 3 ( 6 creed )barrels at mach speeds and got about 1000 rounds of accurate rounds down it.
Many are choosing the other 6's, Dasher, BRA,BRX and such. They are a little slower but
barrel life is 1/2 to 2x again as long.
If you want the fastest, flattest shooting 6,then go with the 6 creed and some 110 smk
or 115 dtac and push them over 3100 fps.
If you want a little better barrel life and just a little slower round, go with a Dasher or BRA
Both very accurate and give up very little. Just a little more work in load development.

I'm done with the 6 creed for the moment. Tried of chasing lands and accurate loads
plus a barrel or two a year. Went to the 6br. Other end of the spectrum

Yep, lots of powder for those little bitty bores.

Reasonable expectations:
243 is 1500
6 creed is 1600
6xc is 1800
6 dasher is 1800
6 br is 3000

Obviously some may go more or less, Ive heard of 243 lasting 3k and Ive heard of 6br lasting 5k but Ive also heard of 243 going out in 1k and 6br going out in 2000, so there is some serious variability in the barrel steel and how abusive people are with them.

If you want great barrel life go with a wider bore.

Any accuracy differences between the BR and Creed? I know opposite ends of the spectrum but the spectrum doesn’t seem that broad.

I have both, well technically a 6BRA and a 6.5 creedmoor barrels for one rifle.

Both can be dang accurate, but the 6BRA (FF loads are straight 6BR rounds) has some scary precision potential. I've shot some really good groups with a 6.5 creedmoor, but my best groups have been with my 6BR/BRA.

Torchy, if you want the least amount of work and nice groups, the 6 creed is the way to go.
Plenty of good brass ( I use Lapua and get 15-20 reloads ) bullets, dies, primers and powder for it.
Just get a Forster micro seater and a FL sizer, some 107 smk's or 105 hybrids some CCI 450 primers and RL 16 or H4350
Start at 41.0 gr. powder and work your way up. No higher than 42.2 ( 3000-3140 fps ) You can start lower and save your barrel
and brass.
Your GTG The 6 creed is plenty accurate.
The 6br is just as easy. Doesn't have the number of factory ammo choices
limited brass ( Lapua) Need to have a 7.5 tw for both to use the heavier bullets.

I’ve been shooting the .243Imp30, it’s Whitley’s cousin to the 6SLR (www.6mmar.com). I chose it over the SLR because I’m not restricted to Winchester brass without needing to turn the necks. His fire forming load of 47.5gr H1000 under a 115gr DTAC has been accurate enough I never bothered with load tuning. Same powdered charge work just as well in formed brass. MV is 2927fps and it’s shy of a complete fill. Final bonus is you can shoot factory .243.

I've burned up a lot of 6 Creedmoor ammo and a few barrels the last few years. 105-108s at 3040-3125 (depending on barrel node and lot of H4350) across multiple 26" barrels, and I have yet to have a barrel that didn't go 1800+ rounds without losing velocity or accuracy. Personally, I plan to stick with it for the forseeable future.

I would go 6cm and not look back for simplicity and for the sheer velocity. In this day and age when I can buy a barrel and have it on my doorstep in two weeks and have it changed in 15min who the f*ck cares if it goes 1500 rounds or 2000 rounds. It's like tires on a car they are there to wear them the hell out. The 6BR is a wonderful cartridge its not a 1200 yard cartridge though, its an 800 yard and in cartridge at least from my experience. It's beauty lies in the fact you use 30gr of powder instead of 42, and that pricey lapua brass for it lasts an eternity.

I just looked and wasn't able to find brass anywhere. Altus had some LRP Alpha but I'm interested in using SRP.

The norma 6xc brass is nothing to sneeze at. Doesn’t have the convenient mtm box but it does come packaged with the little dividers and foam and can be had no issues.

I don’t think you would notice a difference in the large vs small primers down range.

Yeah but all my other calibers I reload for are SRP. Just trying to keep things simple. I'll take a look at the Norma stuff, thanks.

How do the 6 BR and Dasher feed from the magazine?

I'm just breaking in my 6br, in a MPA chassis and TL2 action.
I use the Magpul AICS and just had to sand down the feed lips a little
to clear the bolt and they feed fine, no nose dive.

6xc. Feeds great, good brass selection, good velocity, easy to find a load for. If you are wanting to stay with srp, alpha munitions makes 6xc in srp and lrp.

I got turned onto the 6XC last year. Now its my favorite 6mm cartridge. Easy to load for, stupid accurate, and a little more barrel life then 6 creed or 243 win. A little more velocity then 6 dasher or 6 bra and no fireforming required.. It’s got the best of everything I think.

The node in my 26" barrel is at 3050-3100 with H1000 in Lapua brass with the 105amax and 105 Scenar.
Need to get out and shoot it some more since the barrel is still pretty new and might speed up a bit and have to adjust the load.

6 dasher! norma 6 dasher brass and use a controlled round feed action. simple simple simple!! Above someone showed approx barrel life of 1800 rounds for the dasher and the 6xc. if a 6xc can go 1800 then the dasher will go 2500. i am a smith so i never let my barrels go that high before i cut the ends off and rechamber or just replace the dam thing. barrels are the same as bullets, consumables.
