Which AR-10 should I buy with $3500

I got a good Christmas bonus and i am not married no kids so i want a new bad a** gun. I have a $3500 budget for just the gun, i will be buying the extra stuff one at a time. Here is some shooting history of mine to take into consideration when makeing your recomendations and giving me advice on what i should purchase. I grew up in the woods hunting. I own all differnt types of hunting rifles and pistols. About the furtherest shot that i take are at arund 250 yards. That being said i would like to try some longer range stuff. I have never owned a AR platform gun. I have shot an ar-15 once and fell in love. I will be using the gun to hunt deer (this is why i want a 308 and not 223) and shoot targets from 100 - 600 yards. please keep in mind my inexperence with these guns and what they are capable of when making your recomendations.

THE RIFLE - I want a good mix of reliability and accuracy. i am greatly leaning towards the Larue OBR with a 16'' barrel since i will only be shooting out to 600 yards. That being said I have also be looking at Noveske, POF, and GA Precision.
whichever gun i chose i will be putting a Surefire muzzle brake that can be used as an adapter for the Surefire comensater / silencer.

THE OPTICS - I want a good quality scope for around $1000 with a magnifaction range of around 5x20x50mm for longer range work. for shorter range work i would like to put a holographic site mounted at 10oclock. and a green laser site on the side rail. i want a scope that would be a good fit for night vision that will be mounted in front of the scope. (the night vision will be purchased one day when i can save enough money)so i only want to buy on scope one time.

I would like your recomendations on:
1)which gun to buy
2) barrel length
3) scope
4) holographic site
5) green laser site
6) night vision

I joined this site because there seems to be alot of knowledgeable people on this topic. please only give recomendations on this topic if you have experience with this type of weapon system.

I got one of these not long ago and I'm working on getting the Bushnell HDMR. It shoots great and I haven't had any problems with it. It is very similar to the GAP-10. They share some common parts (upper/lower/handrail/trigger) but the GAP is DI and the POF is piston. They both have great barrels (Bartlein and Rock) but I hear the GAP has a <span style="font-style: italic">very slight</span> edge in accuracy with a tighter chamber. As far as I know the POF <span style="font-style: italic">should</span> run better on a wider range of ammo including garbage like WOLF. I don't plan on testing that out though.

There are several good choices within the budget you have. MY choice would be a Larue OBR. I cannot compare the OBR to the others as I have not had alot of experience with them. I own an 18" OBR and it flat out rocks. Accuracy and (equally important) reliability are trademarks of this rifle. Comes set up to shoot suppressed (two position gas block).

My OBR will hover right between 0.5 -0.6MOA (5 shot groups) with just about anything I feed it (except Hornady TAP), and does a bit better with my handloads.

The reliabilty is perhaps the most impressive feature in my opinion. Mine has been flawless, and I attended a course that Chris Costa happened to be at and witnessed his OBR shoot hundreds of rounds over three days with zero cleaning without a failure. The COF was out to 1140 yards if memory serves. Oh BTW, I'd say at least 80% of those rounds were supressed and the rifle was dirty when he arrived. No appreciable loss of practical accuracy. Just my $0.02.

Not to mention that he wants to top off a $3500 rifle with a $1000 scope.

one stop shop for that budget just get a 20" GAP 10 with bushnell HDMR you'll have a 3/8 moa gun all day and your support a company who supports the sport more then just about everyone else.

the larue is a great gun from what i've heard and so is the LMT MWS i would stick with those three, other scopes around the 1000 price range would be the Vortex PST which is another valid option.

I'm biased but GAP-10 gets my vote as well. Their rifles are legendary and flat-out perform. Not only do they perform...they win matches and do so with battlefield reliability.

Check out Les Baer ar10 also. They also are tack drivers. You won't go wrong with any of the ar10's listed above. In most cases they will shoot better that 99 percent of the people shooting them. I also would and have gone with AAC cans instead of Surfire. Alot easier to get ahold of, half the price, and quieter also.

You could have offered an explaination or asked me why i wanted all that stuff so for the record if anyone thinks i am a fool i will explain myself and what i was thinking. and after i explain myself and you still think that i am a fool then so be it. But please have the decency to explain why you think i am a fool. lol so here it goes..... i want nightvision because i have a hunting permit to shoot deer at night on my farm out of season. beileve it or not but the deer see a spotlight now and head straight for the woods. Hence the need for nightvision. but i want night vision to mount infront of my scope so i will not have to take my scope on and off and it will remain Zeroed. now onto the need for a silencer / compensator. hunting at night with a high powered rifle makes alot of noise and with other homes around the area (three to be exact) this would be something to consider. now onto the holographic site and green laser light. I wanted something for a quick acquisition out to about fifty yards. now we all know that the type of scope i am looking for does not offer a quick acquisition to the target. i do agree with Down Zero about one thing i probably dont need both the holographic site and a green lazer light. what would be your recomendations for a quick acquisition sight? Down Zero what do you recommend for a Scope? I will tell you what my plans are. My plans for a scope goes as follows, to purchase a $1000 scope and to learn a bit about the gun. then at a later time purchase a better scope. trust me i have plenty of other guns that that $1000 scope would work well on. Any recomendations on the best optimized scope to pair with this gun and a type of siting system would be nice information to have. You may be asking yourselves why would i want to own something like this if i am not in the military. There is one good answer - its my right and the government will one day outlaw these types of guns to civilians. Again thanks in advance for your recomentdations and advice. I want to learn.

I own an Armalite AR10A4 and have to say without a doubt, that Armalite rifles are worth looking at.

It sports the 20-inch, 1:12 twist, chrome-lined heavy barrel that was standard on Armalite AR10A4's in 1999. Despite the fact it is chrome-lined, it is a MOA rifle with 175gr SMK-moly handloads. (I believe Armalite now calls this profile a medium-weight barrel.)

As to barrel length, I just don't get the short barrels on 7.62/.308 rifles. The 7.62mm is best suited for long range engagements in Western Europe, and desert/mountain warfare. Anywhere the enemy has learned to stay beyond the effective range of the short barreled 5.56mm M4. Stop wasting the 7.62mm/.308 in diminutive barrels.

Since the expressed purpose of a Winchester .308 is to "reach out and touch someone;" don't why throw away 100's of feet per second with a barrel under 20"

Personally since it's evident your a beginner a DPMS for $900 and a mil/mil Bushnell fixed 10x. Add some rings and you've got yourself a beginners rig for about $1,200.

Go spend the other $2,300 on classes to learn to shoot it.
Or hookers and blow.

Don't let these guys talk you into a high dollar rig right off the bat.
No point in a sub moa rifle for a shooter than can't come close to it for a while anyhow.

Besides. I have that exact rig for hog hunting suppressed and it's more than accurate out to 500meters (farthest range around me).

The difference I believe is roughly 25fps for every 1". So an 18" is only 50fps less than a 20"...

I've owned 2 different Armalite AR-10s (good quality) and although I've heard good about the other brands, I would still say if it was me w/ your budget, go straight to the GAP-10. May as well start w/ the best while you can afford it.

I would call GAP and simply say install X muzzle device AFTER you determine what suppressor you will get in the future. That is, make up your mind on IF you want a detachable suppressor that installs on company Z's muzzle device (like AAC or Surefire) or if you simply want a brake you can remove easily (Badger FTE) and then screw on a suppressor.

You really don't have to explain yourself here, people are always going to have their own opinions and everybody knows what they're like and worth. I would dare say there's a LOT of guys here using NV and suppressors but mostly for pigs. So you have a lot of people to get opinions from.

For your future acquisitions, I'd post in Optics and ask about NV and mounting options. And post in the suppressors section. There are dealers here who will take care of you whenever you decide what you want and have the $. Best of luck to you and if you need any help popping deer, I'll be the first to volunteer assisting...

You can get a DPMS but you have the money and already have a high end AR on your mind. You can get a cheaper version of what you want but you might end up wishing you had bought that GAP-10 and selling the DPMS for a loss.

Maybe you missed it, he already has guns and knows how to shoot for the most part. So why buy an entry level gun?

For what its worth you are not going to go wrong with any of the mentioned. I do not own a gasser as I love my bolts but I have shot all the above. All shoot great and are great platforms. I really liked the Larue OBR for no specific reason just what I seemed to like the best. Buy with confidence with any of the above. Like everyone has said above make sure you have plenty of funds to shoot as much as possible and a good class like RO will be well worth the money. As for bbl length I would tend to go a little longer than 16" if you do plan on shooting longer ranges. I am not here to tell you that it can not be done with a 16" but if it were me I would take the longer bbl every time. Even if I were only to shoot to 600 yards as you mentioned.
Buy what suits you, you are the one spending your hard earned cash and you are the one pulling the trigger. When it comes down to it this game is very much a mental game as well and having confidence in your rig goes a long way. You have selected several great rigs to pick from so however you decide Im sure you will be very happy with your selection as long as you buy for you and not for what someone else wants.

I'm the last guy that needs to be told buy once cry once. And by the way I've owned GAP, US optics, Nightforce, ed brown, les baer etc etc etc

Perhaps those ranting on here about how you should just go with an high end AR10 first should remember this cat isn't shooting out to 1000yards.

The point is you buy what's needed for the task at hand. If I know all my shots are around 200 with the occasional opportunity to go to 500 or 600 you don't go buy a sub moa rifle made for 1000.

If i'm shooting long range got a rifle for that. Hogs, got a rifle for that and so on.

I was in the exact same position as the original poster. I wanted a high end semi-auto in .308 Win and looked at the various options. In the end I was down to the Gap-10 or LaRue OBR. I was leaning heavily toward the OBR cause of their reputation for after the sale customer support (...and being from Texas helped their cause). But, in the end I went with the Gap-10. Still waiting patiently for it's arrival so I can't speak to it yet but know I will be happy. Honestly, I know I would have been happy with an OBR as well. For me, it came down to price point. I got the Gap-10 with my chosen options for about the price of a base OBR. And, the Gap-10 comes with scope mount. That is what swayed my decision. The money saved can be put toward better optics to top it off.

Honestly in your position I would sign up for a reputable class such as Rifles Only and speak with an instructor about making a rifle available to you for the class. Once there I would really pay attention to what other shooters are using and really take a look at what's out there and how well it actually works in the field. You will get valuable training and probably save yourself a lot of money in the long run by getting the right equipment the first time. It will also help you define what you are really looking for.

As for hunting I too don't like a gas gun. It's heavier and far less streamlined, which makes for a long day when on a stalk or attempting to walk to your stand unnoticed in the dark.

Nothing wrong with spending the money on a nice "first" rig. I started with AR's that way. Instead of dicking around with Rock River and Bushmaster, I went straight to a Noveske. Ever since then, Daniel Defense and BCM have also made it to my collection. No reason you have to take a step back.
I agree if you skimp on it now, you'll end up paying more down the line.
If I were in the market for a semi auto 308, I'd definitely take a look at the GAP-10 and the OBR. Both will serve you well from all the positive feedback I've read about both.

I would have to agree with a lot of people and say go with a GAP rifle and the Bushnell HDMR w/ GAP G2 Reticle. Definitely an awesome combo than can be had in your price range and we a bad ass rig. Which is exactly what your looking for. If I had your change to spend on a rifle that is what I would do. Maybe some day

i think i am going to flip a coin between the Larue OBR and GAP 10. i have done alot of research and they are neck and neck IMO. What to do what to do???????? An important point that has not been mentioned, is that if you really are planning to shoot supressed, then I would go with a piston gun and not a DI. I agree that the extra weight and cost is not worth it most of the time, but it is a diferrent story with a suppressor. So, my vote goes for a POF vs a LWRC REPR.

Have you thought about a Springfield M1-A? MSRP is $3555 for the M1A/M21 Tactical model. Or a National Match for $2300. Have a look at Gallery Of Guns website. Use the Gun Genie. Its just a thought but the M1A system is a great tack driving platform. And Surefire and Advanced Armament make muzzle brake and flash hider/quick attach adapter systems for it and there are quite a few nice stocks built for them too. McMillan and Sage to name a couple.

In my opinion two more bad suggestions here.

Unless your putting some major rounds through it there' s no reason you really need a piston rifle. Even if you are putting a bunch of rounds down range at once it's not all that big a deal to actually have to get in and clean your rifle.

And the quality of a POF or LWRC pale in comparison to perhaps a 416 or the more readily available FN SCAR anyhow if you just had to be the cool kid on the block with the best.

Of those I still have my 416 which as far as I've seen the quality can not be compared to.
The POF I bought was immediately sold after I got it. fit and finish were shit. Just an obvious lack of quality.


This cat obviously has way more money than experience. Again it's money better spent on classes to learn. And a good suggestion above stated that once you get to a couple classes you'll see what the guys are using and make a better decision buying.


Because the likely scenario here is not "buy once, cry once". It's your going to spend way to much on a high end rifle and optic then your going to sell after you get some experience and find out something else works better for you. At a loss by the way.
I'm sure none of these guys will complain when your selling that GAP on the ads here at a loss.
