Deciding to get either a 1 piece base or a 2 piece base for my scope. I have always used a 2 piece setup but now a 1 piece makes more sense to me. Am I thinking right or wrong?

I use 2 pc in my hunting bolt guns. I figure if I have to get my fingers in there to clear something - it is easier with a 2 pc.
FYI - I have never had to do this.
On a long range gun I'd go with the 20 MOA EGW also.

dolecs, if you have a BDL (hinged floor plate set up) a two piece base is much easier to top feed (that's why Tac Ops rifles come with two piece bases). If you're using a detachable mag (DBM), then one piece is the way to go because you'll get more freedom with your optics.

Nightforce sells a good 2 piece 20 MOA picatinny rail set if you have a BDL setup. If you have a DBM, get the EGW with torx screws (buy them separately if need be) because the hex head design that comes with them have been known to strip.

As for right now I don't have a tactical scope, using a high powered hunting scope which I can shoot up to 400 yards or so, do I need a 20 moa base?

Properly installed, each type should work equally well. Just as single-piece bases can be bedded, two-piece bases can and should be, as well. Bedding can be used to establish base slope, either type.

If you use bedding or shims to establish slope you will need to ream - not lap - your rings. If you don't get the inside of your rings to "slope" you will dent you scope tube! This comes from experience as I tried to shim the rear base to get more MOA of elevation.
Another option is to use the Burris rings with inserts. Put the .030" low insert in the bottom of the front ring and the .030" high insert in the top of the rear ring. On their 30mm rings you only get .010" to play with though.

i think i will go for a 1 piece base, deciding on my rings right now, cant afford to spend $150-200 on rings right now but i have been looking at either burris xtr rings or weaver tactical rings. Both look solid and come from reputable companies. Anyone have any input on these 2 brands of rings? open to suggestions

Never had problems with the Burris xtr rings and it's very affordable. I also have a set of SWFA rings (identical to the xtr) and it has also served me well.

If you don't mind spending a little more, look into getting seekings rings. There are several in the FS section in various heights for approx. $100.

Also, you'll want to look into getting the scope as low as possible. Just as reference, I used the SWFA low rings (0.80inch height) with my weaver 3-15x50mm (58mm objective bell) cleared with butler creek flip caps by 1mm.
