I sent a 7mm Rem Mag for custom build on the group buy going on here. I shoot f-class. No hunting. Looking at what the best brass would be? Lapau doesn't make it, so thats out. I see my options would include Winchester, Remimgton, Nolser, and Norma. Leaning towards Norma. Any thoughts?

I plan to shoot the 180gr bullets. I really don't have much access to Alliant powders. Seems to be spotty at best here in indiana. My club gets monthly shipments of powder in. I'm looking at Retumbo or H1000. We have plenty of that in right now. Any thoughts on which may be a more accurate of a load?

Thanks

Retumbo and H1000 both are good powders in that case, I'd lean a bit toward H1000 just because the load data suggests a bit less volume is needed and max load with either of them is going to be compressed a bit from Hodgdon's data at 70.8 gr of Retumbo and 69.5 gr of H1000. So it should be a bit easier to deal with and less futzing around trying to get it to settle in the case nicely. But really it probably boils down to availability and what your rifle likes better. Velocity from Hodgdon's data gives the edge to Retumbo by 30fps, that said, I've found with these two powders, at max load, just below pressure signs, the velocity between the two is less than 10 fps difference in 7mm mag.

Also You'll get 1 more load per lb of H1000 than Retumbo!!! hahahaha.

As to brass, Norma is good brass but spendy, Nosler is too but REALLY spendy and due to their process of weight sorting you get a VERY uniform box of brass, but that's 50 pcs, Then the next box may be a batch from a VERY different weight class. ie it's very uniform inside of one box, but the box to box uniformness isn't nearly as good. You might get lucky and you might get 2 boxes from opposite ends of the weight spectrum. Neither brand will take a lot of work to make ready to load though, so that's nice.

Win and Rem brass are going to be good brass, but might take more work to uniform them up and make them consistent.

Man, where are people finding h1000 and retumbo these days?

I scored an 8lb of H1000 week before last at a place in Omaha, NE on a road trip. Guns Unlimited IIRC. It was the last one, but it was amazing to see what they had on the shelf. Price was damn good too @ $164.99. Unfortunately they don't ship. It's one of the big list of places I check when I'm on the road and driving.

Kirkd,

I have recently switched to NormaUSA brass for the 7rem mag. This has been excellent brass, on my 3rd reload and no problems. I use my other brass for silhouette shooting not F class.

I use 180 Berger Hybrids. They shoot awesome. I currently use R22.

There are several 5lbs jugs of R22 at Jays sporting goods in Claire, Michigan. If you call them they will hold a hug or two for several days till you get there. Price was $110ish. This powder is great. I use 60grs and get 2760ft/sec. I also shoot F class and was using the Amax with 4831sc, but will be switching. Both rounds shoot .3MOA consistently in my rifle, however I want the better BC at 1k.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks,
From the research Ive done, it appears that the Rl-22 with the 180's are the way to go. Cant get winchester brass currently, but Norma brass is available. Ive read up a lot on Norma brass the last day or two, and it seems like excellent brass

Kirkd,

You mentioned Indiana so that's the reason I told you about Jays. If you drive it's several hours from the Indiana/Michigan border. I was there today.

They have can also ship it with a hazmat fee. Trust me I have thought about it even though I am 70 mins away, but they have the new nightforce competition and leupold 7-42 power. So the drive is worth it to me to look through the glass. They will let you go outside with the glass!!! Talk about awesome scopes! I also scored federal match magnum primers at Jays at 10% discount.

As for the RL22 and 7rem mag, I am sold. I found 2 nodes both of which shoot .3moa. I can go faster but I am comfortable with my choice at 60, mild recoil for me. My other shots were within .6moa during the work up.

Tell me what works out for you. Hopefully we can shoot against each other in the future.

My rifle is throated long, loading out to 3.50+ with 180 hybrids. I have found some .3 moa loads with both retumbo and h1000, but the retumbo ES was excessive and try as I might I couldn't make a dent in it. I got up to 3080 with retumbo and 3000ish, more like 2980 with h1000, but with h1000 I got the ES down to 30 and SD of 10. Still not exceptional, but better than the 80 I was seeing with Retumbo. This 7 mag has been the hardest rifle to find good ES that I have owned. The only thing I didn't try was annealing.

Oh and out of 100 pieces of Nosler brass, the weight variance was about 1.3 grains, with one node at 214.3 and another at 215. All the brass was within a couple tenths of those two weights. They must have two machines cranking it out. It is the best out of the box brass I have used. Only one problem, if you can call it that, the primer pockets are very tight. I needed my bench mounted primer seater for the job.

Update:

I went to our local gun show last weekend in Indianapolis. I ended up getting 10lbs of Alliant Reloader 22 and 200 pieces of Winchester brass. Now I'm on the hunt for Federal match primers. Called Sierra. They're schedule to start running the 190's in 4-6 weeks, which is fine. I'm estimating on the rifle to return from the GB buy. And Om still waiting on the stock

Nosler brass, is produced by Norma US with a Nosler headstamp, then prepped/sorted to some degree.
If your willing to cull some cases then you can get similar consistency by buying in bulk and do the work yourself.
As for the quality of the brass itself it is exactly the same.

RL22/ Norma MRP works excellent in the 7 RM, my favorite powder for it is N570 though, gives me excellent velocity 3020 ish with 180s, and accuracy is great, while being more consistent lot to lot.
