I'm wanting to add a bolt knob to my rem 700. Which way is the easiest to DIY at home with basic hand tools and a drill press?

1. Cut the bolt knob completely off, drill a hole in the handle, tap it, then install a threaded stud, then screw on a knob. What size stud do people usually use?

2. Cut the sides of the factory knob off, squaring it up, then round it up, then thread it, then screw new knob on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I like doing things myself, I've recently inletted my own stock for atlas dbm and everything turned out great.....still haven't bedded it though so any tips there would be greatly appreciated too. I just want to ensure it's contacting squarely and clean up some of the small gaps around the dbm. Don't want it stuck in the stock though.

go with method number two. ive done 8 like that and its easy and better than the other way. do you have any pics of your inletting? did u use a mill?

Re: Which DIY bolt knob install?

I don't have any pics, I didn't get it as tight around the dbm as I would have liked but I got the depth spot on. I'm wanting to try and bed the dbm to fill the small gaps around the dbm and just to ensure it's sitting squarely in the stock. I used a drill press, with some mill bits that cut the bottom and on the sides. I had the stock clamped level in a vise and would lock the drill press down at the depth I wanted then slide the stock/vise to cut all of my penciled areas that needed to be removed.

cool id like to see some pictures. i think ima do mine with a mill im just scared i wont get the depth right. who knows i might just send it off to gap and have them do it since thats what they do for a living

I have heard of people using thin plastic, maybe seran wrap around the bottom metal when fitting them to the bedding of a sloppy inlet job. I think once it sets up you can pull it right out and the BM fits pretty snug.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of seran wrap.
