Rifle Scopes Which Nightforce Reticle do you like. Need Input

Hi Guys,
I am a total newbie to long range shooting. I need your opinions on a couple things. I am looking to put some good optics on my Remington 700P as soon as I find a deal. My budget is $1450.00
I want to go with a Nightforce. I am going to take a Intermediate long range course next month. I want your opinions on MOA versus Mil. Lets just say I don't know either. What would you recommend for a beginner in long range shooting as far as reticle. I want to make the right choice. This scope is going to be with me for a while.
I am considering these.
Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50 I am leaning more on this one so far
NIghtforce NXS 5.5-22x50

Range I plan on using this rifle is up to 1000 yards. I want to get involved in matches they have out in Sacramento,Ca.
Also. I have read a bit where some say that the NXS 5.5-22 x 50 is overkill for 1000 yards. What are your opinions on this. What do you use for shooting multiple targets at different distances during a match. I am sure I left something out and will add it later.

Stop by cstactical and see the guys, they have some NF 3.5-15 you can look through. I would do mil/mil learn that system, and you will be squared away with most other tactical shooters out there... NF has 2 great MIL reticles, the MLR and Mildot. Most will recommend the MLR. I like the Mildot personally, but I am old school and am in the minority opinion on this...

Sacramento is a great area and Vu and the guys do a great job up there... NCPPRC

one things for sure get mil/mil

I have the Mil-Dot reticle, and while i think its not bad i think MLR would have been sweet as well

I think for shooting in shrub/bush the mildot works better than the MLR just in the fact that its thicker, however overall i think the mlr reticle is nicer

I dont find the 5.5-22 to be overkill

I like my 3.5-15x on this 22-250 8 twist. I'll take the NP-R1 i have on it now for rangefinding as well as downrange zeroing. Here's 3 1st shot connections at 325, 400 and 525--

I have the MLR on my NF and i like both std Mil Dots and the MLR. Get what you prefer but Mil/Mil is good I think. its all in multiples of 10 and taht makes life simple.

i like to have enough glass......so the variable with a top end of 22x is kosher, so much so infact that many of this type of glass tends to show up in many UKD and long range matches....

I prefer the 5.5-22. You can always dial it down if you need to. If you want to be able to truly use the reticle for ranging and holdovers, the 3.5-15 might be a better fit. If you go with MOA, choose the NP-R1 reticle. If you go mil, stay with the MLR.

mil/MOA its all the same, what ever you feel comfortable with as you are the one that is going to be using it for holds and ranging, make sure that which ever system you choose, you learn how to use it, either one works.

For the Sacto LR matches, the 5.5-22 would be great. For their steel matches, the 3.5-15 would be better. For multiple target/distance engagements, I like my 3.5-15 over my 5.5-22.

I have the NF 5.5-22 X 56mm (MLR) and the 3.5-15 x 50mm F1 (Mild-dot), both with Mil-radian turrets. I have not shot competitions so I can't speak to that. Both scopes have been on 20" .308's. I have a .338 in my future and the 5.5-22 will get switched to that.

After using both I prefer the MLR. It's easier for me to range with out of the two.

With these two scopes on 20" .308 rifles I've done four precision rifle courses out to 600 yards, one out to 1,000 yds. and numerous range sessions from 1,100 yds. in. Which is not much experience, but since you are asking as a newb, perhaps my slightly less newb experience will be useful.

The NF 5.5-22 X 56mm is too much scope (for practical courses of fire) under 1,100. It takes more time to range targets and to get on movers than the 3.5-15 x 50mm F1. It's also a little large for my rifles.

So, for practical courses of fire I recommend the 3.5-15 x 50mm, F1 if you can afford it, with MLR reticle. The F1 comes with ZeroStop, I think it's an option on the 2nd focal plane version. I highly recommend the ZeroStop feature.

Using a 2nd focal plane scope for practical rifle (training) under 1,000 yards is not really a handicap, it just means you have to train yourself to remember to return to ranging power, and that's a training issue. So if budget is the limitation don't feel like you have to have one. But it is nice.

Of course, at really high magnification a F1 reticle is larger, so aiming points will seem coarser. So second focal plane does have an application, but not so much for my use.

I got into PR about a year ago and went through the same process, I settled on Mils over MOA and have had no regrets. As previously stated, whether you choose Mil or MOA, get turrets to match.

You will love your NF scope, it won't let you down, and I think it's the best value in serious glass. I also recommend adjusting the illuminated reticle down to the lowest setting you can still see it at (in a dark room), then leave it there. That has worked for all of my low-light shooting.

In my field guns, all 5.5x22x56, I have 2 NPR2s and 1 NPR1, but I certaily prefer the NPR2, I would love to have 2moax2moa but they don't make it, and they won't do custom reticles.

I am running 5.5-22 moa on moa with npr1 it is a very nice setup, I really,really like it.

Also am running the 3.5-15 with npr1 and I feel it is a little too fine and probably would prefer the npr2 in it.(if I take it hunting and the battery goes dead there is no way to see the reticle it is too fine imo.)

There are no real bad choices as long as you go moa on moa or mil on mil. also definately get the zero stop it is worth every penny!!

NightForce NXS 3.5-15x50 w/ MLR and .10 Mil-Radian ZS - Hi-Speed NXS1550HSZSMR-MLR

I ended up buying my scope through Sport Optics. These are some really nice guys. I cant say enough. I will definetly buy from them again and recommend them to my freinds.
