Hello shooters. I'm looking for a relatively cheap spotting scope, for use at the range with my AR-15. I'm considering these two models:

Konus 20-60x 80mm

Barska Blackhawk ED 20-60x 60mm

The Barska scope might have more eye relief than the Konus, and the Barska has ED lenses, and it's cheaper, but the Konus has 80mm lens vs. 60mm for the Barska.

Which one would you go for?

Edit: I put the links back

Haha, thanks. Actually I'm looking for ~300yd on paper targets, using 223 bullets. These scopes are getting good reviews on midwayusa

I wanted to know which one was better, but I'm glad I asked, now I know I need to do more research.

I don't want to start a rant, but It's always good to ask. There's a lot of knowledge on the Hide. If a product is made for long range shooting, then someone here has probibly tryed it. Money is always well spent when you buy "quality" optics. I say it's better to regret spending money once, than have to spend it twice, for the same thing. I do, hope you find a lot of good information here. Welcome to the Hide.

If you go cheap try bushnell, I have had good luck with there glass ,, but if you think you may want a better one in the future try to save a few more bucks and check out the leupold golden ring..here is a link.

Re: Which of these spotting scopes would you pick?

I tried, few low end scopes, the wind river, and Burris land mark were good up to about 20x but after that the eye relief goes quickly until at max power your eye lashes will be bending on the glass.

I will second the Gold Ring reccomendation. I went through a half dozen cheap=shitty spotting scopes before moving up to a gold ring. You can snag a used one off ebay for about $800, and sell it any time to get all your money back.

Buy once cry once, definitely applies to glass.

I've got a Bushnell on order right now. I had a chance to check some out at the Bass Pro Shop in Denver without the reticle. I couldn't justify spending 4 times as much on the Leupold Mk4 personally. Of course the Mk4's I've looked through have all been beat to shit and were still great scopes. Good luck on the search

hunter-
perhaps it would be better to listen to those who have used the products than not.

My personal scopes are an old Wind River that is ok and a second hand Nikon, earth and sky, MUCH better and for only 100 bucks. Found it in the Hamburg, Pa Cabelas bargain cave.

Not quite right helpful hint of the day- shop second hand sources like the bargain cave, pawn shops and small gun shops. Alot of times they dont know the value of the item. Got an old school MK4 10X with BDC rings for 400 bucks!

The Wind River would need some help seeing 223 holes at 300. a contrasting backround behind the target may help.

When I spot for a shooter I use trace to determine where the bullet hit on a target. The guy using the konus could see trace and once he calibrated his eye to trace he was a good beginner spotter.

Your asking alot of an optic to see a 1/4" circular hole 3 football fields away with some mirage thrown in.

Good Luck

Definitely check out the Vortex scopes. Trust me, you don't want to skimp on optics. You'll think you're saving money but in the long run you'll end up replacing cheap glass anyway.
