I respectfully request some advice on a precision rifle optic. I have about $1200 to work with for a rifle scope. The host rifle is a NIB Remy SPS Varmint in .308. I have a 20 MOA EGW base, and MK4 30mm medium rings. My plan is to install the scope and see what the rifle is capable of before investing any more cash in it. If it is in the MOA range with FGMM the stock will become a war club for my 11yr old and I will put a HS or B&C stock on. I generally prefer buying the best quality I can afford new or used. The rifle will be used for 100 - 1000yd targets and general coyote and varmints.

Any wisdom or redirection from the Hide would be greatly appreciated.

I think a leupold mark 4 4.5x14x50 would be perfect. This is more than enough for 1000 yards. Nightforce is another great option but the price is a little more. I have a mark4 4.5x14x50 on my 308 and its perfect. Really think you would be happy with that.

I vote for a Vortex Viper PST 6-24 FFP. I chose the SFP since I don't plan on fast acquisition of targets and ranges. I had a 14x but like the extra magnification of the 24x. I also like the illuminated reticle. Better to not need it and have it, than need it and not have it. Great reticle, glass, and bomb proof warranty. Love the crisp clicks on the turrets as well as the zero stop. I have no complaints thus far. I consider it money well spent.

Can't wait for the day to get a new NF or S&B, something to check my wife's BC when she goes ballistic. ;-). My eye gets hard thinking about looking through one.

A new or used 5-20 SWFA SS would be my first pick, then a used NF, vortex pst or leupold. Unless you don’t mind a 2.5-10 power. If that’s the case the old Nikon Tactical's are great and have proven better than the comparable leupold mk4's I have owned.

My wife just bought be a Sightron SIII 8-32 LRMOA and I love it. They can be had for around $900 and then buy a case of ammo and go out and enjoy, or spend the extra money on reloading supplies if you dont already reload. If the 8-32 is too much I also have the 6-24 and it is awesome also. I have a nightforce 8-32 and I like my sightron better.

Above there are six options take your pick on what you will intend on using the rifle for. Some are with 1500 or less range. The good thing about this is you can get the krestel weather meter, anti cant bubble, and a good base. You cant go wrong with any of them. Have fun deciding which to go with with and hope it helps.

Umm this is just my .02 worth..

But since your NEW to this... Why drop the entire $1200 on a scope?

Why not look at the Vortex line... the HS model from Midway USA... Its about $400 and you could use the rest of the money for for ammo and practice..

Worst case scenario you DONT get into shooting and your NOT out of a bunch of money...

But then again... thats just my .02 worth.

The one he is talking about is Option 4 that I posted. There is also a pretty big thread/review on the scope in this same section.
