Which Remington 700 should I pick?

Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and I have a question. I'm looking into getting an R700 in .308. The dilemma I'm having is which model to choose from. For example, do I pick the Varmint, or SPS compact, etc. The most I'm looking at spending is around $700. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance!

I've been looking at the SPS Tactical AAC-SD Model. It's 20" and already threaded...pretty good value seems like.

I think the sps is a good staring point as well for getting into the benchrest game. You can always upgrade as you want to later on with other stock options,triggers, barrels, etc. The remington m700 platform offers almost endless possibilities.

get an sps and spend the rest on a nice base, rings, and a good scope.

Thanks! One more question...can I still shoot w/o a suppressor due to the threaded barrel? I looked it up and for the price it's not bad at all. I just don't want to pick it up and then HAVE to by a suppressor right away.

Oh yeah no problem on that. It has a thread protector or you could get a brake or flash hider.

oh no you certainly do not have to, but it is a nice feature if you ever decide to in the future. PLus if you sell it in the future, it might be a more desirable feature for other potential buyers. For someone to take a non-threaded barrel to have it threaded is roughly a $100 expense. Just keep your thread protector on it and shoot away.

Thanks! I just looked at the SPS tactical...good price too. The description didn't mention anything about being pre-drilled for mounts...would this be something I would have get a gunsmith to perform?

No, they should be drilled for a base from the factory. All you will need is the rifle, 20 moa base, rings, and scope and you'll be shooting!

+1 Both can be upgraded as you learn more about what you want. New stock and trigger are at the top of the list to change.

I appreciate all the advice! After searching the web for hours I am going to go with the AAC. From what everyone has been saying and the reviews I have read I believe I can't wrong! Hopefully by late next week I will have it! I will be sure to let everyone know how it shoots! Happy New Years to everyone!

I would look at the varmint model. You can upgrade the stock later and you have a 700p. One thing to consider is buying a quality used one. Might be able to get a 700p used for $700.

If you have the money for a new stock straight up, go with the action and barrel profile you like, as well as finish.

If the stock will not be changed, I would recomend a 700P purely because the stocks have no flex at all as well as an alloy bedding block. You can still lightly bed it anyway for peace of mind, however it should still shoot lights out.

You hear the occasional story of a remy 700 with a flexible stock shooting like crap because of stock flex interfering with barrel harmonics during lock time.

It is common to see SPS Varmints or Tac models on a mcmillan, manners, B&C or AICS stock, and is an all round good way to get a decent precision rifle with a budget.

Do you ever hunt at all or are you just shooting paper? If your budgeting at 700 your not shooting competition so it would help to know what you like to do with it. Also if you just wanna shoot paper or steel plates what range do you shoot at now and what range do you want to be shooting at?

Update....
I can get the AAC-SD for $619 out the door. I'm in the Air Force and I'm able to order is on base. The only problem is that they out of stock and my source doesn't know when and if they will be get one in....I was thinking of an alternative but I would like everyone's opinion first.

My other choice is to go with the 700 SPS tactical for only $600 out the door. It doesn't have the 1 in 10 twist like the AAC does but it has the 1 in 12 twist.

Can someone please explain to me the pros or cons of going with the SPS tactical instead of the AAC?

For now I'm shooting paper and steel targets. Ranging from 100-300 yards. Eventually I would like to shoot longer distances. I plan on hunting next season...didn't get the chance to do it this time around. Any help is always and greatly appreciated!!

Bottom line...should I just be patient and order the AAC or go ahead and order the SPS tactical and get it by Thursday?

Just wait for the AAC SPS. The threaded barrel alone will be worth the extra money and wait. This way you can put your own brake on to cut the recoil down.

The 1/10 twist should have been standard for along time but its hard on the lighter weight bullets. For tactical shooting 155's plus the 1/10 is great and with the heavier bullets like 178-210's its ideal.

Its not that the 12 twist wont work, its just that a 10 twist is more flexable rifle.

Buds Guns had an SPS Tac AAC when I checked earlier today. It will cost you slightly more. Call them to order it and let them know you are active duty. They will discount it a bit.
It was listed on Buds for 595 I believe and that is with shipping. Pretty hard to beat.

Well everyone I did it! I just ordered the 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD from Buds Guns. Thanks FDKAY! It was listed for $595 last night and when I ordered it today it was down to $586. Out the door it came to $605...not bad at all. UPS will be picking it up today so I should get it soon! I will be sure to post my range reports etc.
