I'm looking into buying my first 'battle rifle' and the only things I really know are the 'features' I'd like. No specific caliber, and no real brand loyalty.

Balanced, 50-400 yds, reliable, 4x multiplication, <10 lbs if possible, somewhat fast target reacquisition.

Are you going to hunt with this? Predator or larger? How much you wanting to spend on rifle? What power of scope you wanting? Here is what I think, you will get alot of feedback on this. If you are going to hunt deer size game with this rifle, I would go with a 6.8spc. You can find quality factory ammo for it if you dont reload. It might not be highly accurate out to 400 yards and this would really be beyond what I would think of effective killing range on deer size game, people have done it and will do it but 400 yards is beyond what I would try. 6.8 has more punch than a 5.56 and if you hunt deer/hogs it is a great round. I would look to Bison Armory or Ironworks tactical for a 6.8. If you are paper punching and varmint hunting, I would go with a Ar-15 chambered in 5.56 with a 223 wylde chamber with a 1 in 8 or 1 in 7 twist rate. The 223 wylde is accurate and you can shoot 223 or 5.56 ammo in it. You can find 5.56 ammo anywhere with tons of different offerings, cheap plinking or expensive hunting rounds. With either a 6.8 or 5.56 I would get a stainless, melonite, or chrome lined barrel, easier cleaning and longer lasting than chrome moly. I also like chromed bolt carrier, once again, easier to clean and i think it aids in running smoother and always like no rust on my stuff. There are tons of great brands. I personally think you cant go wrong with a daniel defense, Rock River Arms, Bison Armory, Ironworks tactical, noveske, comes down to personal preference really, there are lots of good ones. I forgot to mention barrel length. If 6.8 I would go with a 16 inch barrel, no real advantages with longer barrels on the 6.8 On the 5.56, it really depends on what you want the rifle for. For home defense, closer range work, go with a 16 inch. If you want to go to your 400 yard mark, go with at least an 18 inch but can get one up to 24 inches. For a varminter type heavy barrel, I like the 18 inch. Still able to pack it around, but can go the distance as well. All really depends on what you are looking for. I am no expert by any means. Just my two cents.

I have dedicated hunting rigs, but being able to hunt with it wouldnt be bad. Mind you the furthest I can see where I hunt is ~150 yds. Want to go 4x multiplication. It's not a right this second thing, and I'd like to 'buy once cry once' so money isn't a big factor. Any barrel length 16-24 is fine as long as it still falls under 10 pounds (just the rifle, unloaded).
I have a friend trying to sale me on a scar but idk much about battle rifles so I wanted to ask here before dropping money on something that'll sh!t out on me and not give much return.

This is sniperhide, so I assume you want accuracy. 16 midlenght or 18 rifle lenght ar15 with a good barrel and trigger + freefloat tube would be my choice. Alot is personal preference though. No experience with US brands, others can help with that.

When you say "battle rifle", that means a full-powered 7.62 NATO self-loader. That is what comes to mind when I hear the term "battle rifle".

If you are looking for a rugged, field-grade rifle, with fast sight picture acquisition, I would shoot for 7lbs or less in rifle weight.

Ahh, well I apologize for lack of terminology. I'm not hunting specifically for 7.62.
Any specific rifle make you prefer that fits these 'wants'?

The listed requirements are general enough for me to list a laundry sheet of recommendations, so I would consider narrowing down exactly what you are looking for.

Reliability: I expect the gun to run well in _______ conditions, using ________ ammunition, on __________ rounds shoot schedule per________ (time period).
Accuracy: I expect it to group _______MOA for ___ rounds average shot group at _______yards/meters, using____________ammunition.
Magazines: I would like to be able to equip it with _____________magazines, or I don't care, I'll buy uber expensive and limited mags for peculiar systems, no biggie.
Ammunition: I would like it to be readily available at local sporting goods stores in my particular region (yours isn't stated), or I don't care, I'll order unique calibers online in bulk, then hand load for it.

Terminal ballistics: I need it to penetrate or perforate ____________ mediums, with _____________results.
Recoil: I do/don't care about recoil impulse, and my kids or small family members might like to try this some time as well.
Furniture: I'm a monster of a man, exceeding 7ft, 300lbs, or I'm 5ft 2" with a small stature, I need appropriate furniture to fit the gun to these anatomical considerations.
Trigger: I would like ______ trigger weight and 2-stage/single stage operation.

These questions, with examples can help you narrow down exactly what you're looking for.

^^ WHAT THE MAN SAID!! ^^ ;)

To put it simply...your options are nearly endless based on the very rudimentary requirements you set forth in your initial post, but I'm betting that with some more thoughtful consideration of what YOU REALLY WANT/NEED from the rifle in terms the specific questions/comments LRRPF52 set forth above that you'll be in a far better position for folks to help get you pointed in the right direction (or 2 directions or 10 if that be the case). ;)

6' flat by 175, fit.

Filled in the blanks.

I have a Sig716 7.62 NATO with 16 inch barrel. This fits some of your requirements but perhaps not all.

Do I read right, you will be shooting 300 rounds per week! At that level of (sustained shooting) one downside of the Sig will be extra cleaning cycles, compared to perhaps other systems such as an H&K 91 family. The Sig will certainly meet/exceed the accuracy requirements. And it has an adjustable stock, so when you morph between your 7 foot self and your 5'2" self you can adjust that aspect. Sig comes with full quad rails. It is under 10 pounds "dry".
The Sig is a good "tight" rifle, that means it should be more accurate than something like an H&K, but the H&K will win on reliability and will eat ammo my Sig will not. Two of my buddies have H&Ks, so I've fired them some.
So given your requirements, either an AR-10/SR-25 clone would work but an H&K might be better given the 300 rounds per week. If I were in this market I would want to shoot both and talk to owners before deciding, like I did before I got my Sig. I "love" the Sig and think I made the right choice, but I like cleaning rifles and my buddies don't, so I think H&Ks are better for them :).

Every responsible adult should have at least 1 combat worthy rifle. In my opinion it should be a mil spec or better AR15 chambered in 5.56. There are good reasons for this that include parts and ammo compatibility with military and nato weapons. If in a SHTF situation you can get ammo and parts off dead bodies. That's probably not gonna happen with 6.5 or 6.8 rifles.
If you have a mil spec rifle as I described and are interested in another caliber then get it.

Agree.

The OP said 'battle rifle'. The logical choices in the US are an AR in 5.56 or an AK47. Since AK's are no longer cheap, and the price of ammo has narrowed (just lately) if I had to pick one I would go with the AR for the reasons stated above - and for the superior ergonomics compared to an AK. I have both. And derivations. And extras... it's a sickness....

I'm selling a pof 308 that comes with a m308 scope and 5 20 round pmags

Well, the little CMMG MK3 CBR fits all of that really well.

*EDIT* - they updated their site, now it is listed as having a CMMG SV brake instead of the Surefire...deducting points for that.

I think post that once a week, must still be the honeymoon phase.
