Have you ever accidentally won a Gunbroker auction? I sort of did. I put in a low bid on an unfired HK MR556a1 and to my surprise I won. And instantly regretted it. There is nothing wrong with the gun, which appears to be a 2020 vintage with the competition muzzle device and a geisseile(?) rail. The thing is, I already have a KAC LRP and a LMT piston gun and I’m not sure I want this much money tied up in high-end proprietary ARs. I really like the LMT so that is going to stay, but I am more ambivalent on the KAC.

The KAC is light, ambi friendly, and well put together. I have had inconsistent accuracy with it but that is likely me. I plan to suppress whichever I keep and the di gas system might(?) be a little gassier than the HK, which is extra annoying for me as I am left handed. Also, KACs are selling at a premium in some venues.

The HK is heavy and not as ambi friendly, and while I could send it out to get the barrel reprofiled that is extra expense. Also, I don’t know how well it shoots because if I fire it I can no longer claim it is unfired. I would shoot it but if I am thinking about selling it being able to say it is unfired is worth something.

So, from people who have experience with both, if I do get rid of one which one should it be?

Seems like that cuts both ways. The KAC is probably at its highest value and parts may become hard to get. You are right about the HK being a beefy boy.

KAC is still working on fulfilling contract obligations and don’t seem overly concerned about the civilian market. I’d personally keep the Hk and sell the KAC since the fanboys are all over it and over paying for it.

I am biased towards LMT and KAC.

With that being said, The HK is one of those guns that I think is sort of half assed at best, its about a pound heavier than the LMT Piston which is accepted as on the heavier end of AR's. The hand guard looks like it was made by PSA. The trigger is shit compared to its peers. its got an odd ball rail height, and depending on who one talks to the barrel may or may not be lined.

I am sure it runs well enough but it just comes across as another marginal European style 556.

If you need money, sure. A Mod 2 LPR will bring handsome money in an open auction on Gunbroker. Sell anything you think you can get back later if you want to. Probably a lot more MR556 available on the market than the least popular SR15 model, though.

You know, I had that thought this morning as well. One more personal failure to add to the pile.

That’s what I’d do, the accuracy may surprise you. They’re capable of MOA which is impressive for a chrome lined piston driven semi auto.

I dumped my LPR within 6 months of buying it. The factory barrel was a turd, shot great out of the box and went to shit in about 300 rounds. KAC replaced the barrel with a new one and I sent it down the road.

Don’t get me wrong I like KAC stuff a lot but the LPR isn’t all that great. For what the LPR costs currently you can build a badass SPR with Seekins billet receivers or whatever top tier receivers you want, whatever rail you want, whatever bolt/operating system you want, and a Proof SS barrel that will shoot circles around the LPR and have $1K-$2K left in your wallet.

It’s all in what you want. If having a KAC gives you the warm and fuzzies then by all means keep it and deal with the issues but if I were you I’d bitch to KAC about the accuracy issues and try to get them to replace the barrel and then list that bitch on gunbroker for $4K and let it go.

Well, I took them both out and I’m surprised just how much more accurate the HK was than the KAC. Using 77g FGGM and IMI Razorcore the HK was a consistent 1 MOA or below, and when it was more than that I knew it was me. The KAC is more of a 2-2.5 MOA gun.

Is that within the expected performance or does it indicate a problem? (It could of course be the shooter, but I was doing well with the HK, so I’m not completely incompetent.)

I shot an email to KAC to see if I should send it in or of this is within spec. I’ll probably still sell it but don’t want to sell a lemon.

I think the SR is a special gun. On the Reliability side of the AR house it has features that no one else has. Because of that and it was the final chapter of Stoner I think it's a no brainer keeper.

The HK in my opinion is not a special gun. If it was a real 416 upper than that would be special. Presample depot had then for around 3500 a while back. You could look around and find it cheaper. I just saw those about a month ago. But like LEO trade in GLOCKS they look like they have under 500 rounds of use.
