I haven't kept up on my newer phones so maybe someone can help me out here. Let me start off by saying I don't want an Apple product.
Here's what I'd like: inexpensive Verizon capable smartphone (don't want to sign a new contract to get it), wifi capable (will just use my home network so I don't have to upgrade to a data plan), capable of running ballistic apps, and GPS function. Cameras, processor speed, etc are nice, but not a major factor. So, what are my options?

    Re: Which smartphone?

Your inexpensive without a contract thing is going to be the hard part. Usually you get one or the other.

Any particular reason you dont like Apple, does everything you ask for? As does Android.

Droid X. It will do everything you mentioned well and they've been out long enough that you could probably find a deal on one if you look around. Craigslist is a decent place.

    Re: Which smartphone?

Cool thanks. Through a little research it looks like Verizon will recognize it as being a smartphone and automatically bump you up to the data plan...

you could wait a few weeks and get the iphone for Sprint

all smartphones are automatically signed up for a data plan.

If you didnt have data except at home then you wouldn't be able to use GPS unless you'd be home.

Depends what hes doing with the gps. Their is an app called gps status, even without any data connection, or service it will give you your coordinates be it utm or lat/long along with speed, distance to a previous "mark" elevation etc.

You might be able to find an incredible by htc, I have one and its a good phone. 1gb snapdragon processor, 8mp camera 8gb memory plus an sd slot. 7xx ram if I remember right. That being said, any smartphone you get, you WILL have to pay for the data plan. Its a pay to play game.

Do your research, I personally like htc, they are a smooth operating phone, everything in them is linked together. I just like the lay out on them a lot more than the motorolas (personal prefrence). Honestly though, if you do go to buy a new phone, you might as well give it 4-6mths and let a few new phones with 4g come out, and think of going that route.

Just put in the extended battery on my Thunderbolt. It rocks. Super fast runs anything, GPS, turn by turn directions has latitudes that lets me know where the kids and wife are, runs all the shooting software real fast, 32gigs of memory. Whats not to love.

Some of the prepaid plans would be great...especially the Virgin plan, but unfortunately their service coverage sucks... I'll keep doing my research for awhile until my current Verizon contract expires. It's hard to justify a $60+ single line plan when you're unemployed.

And Sprint is the only carrier that has (true) unlimited data. I was looking at switching carriers until I learned you have to buy a certain amount of data and pay as you go once exceeded. At our current levels my monthly bill would have increased at least 50 percent.

    Re: Which smartphone?

If you are hard on your phones and other gear, you might consider the Casio GzOne Commando! It's what I chose. The screen is a little smaller and it's 3G but it runs all the droid apps I've downloaded.

I pound the shit out of my gear and my Brother in Law, a Verizon Wireless sales guy, is amazed at the damage I've already done to mine: I've only had it 7 weeks!

Today, I took my 3 mile walk (I'm old, OK...) and then emptied my pockets when I got home in order to jump in the pool.

I swam contentedly for a good 30 minutes or so.

It was only when I got out of the pool that I realized I had neglected to take my phone out of my back pocket!

    DOHHHHHHHHHHHH!

It lived up to it's name! It is completely unfazed! Everything works just fine!

    Just a suggestion

    Re: Which smartphone?

That's why I'm looking for a phone that is wifi capable. When I do use my phone/laptop I'm usually at home or around a wifi source, and would just as soon use that than burning up mobile data.

    Re: Which smartphone?

I'm on Sprint and have a pimped out HTC Evo.
The Evo's Verizon brother is the HTC Thunderbolt.

Fuck the Droids. Motorola phones are garbage. Samsung as well.
Get the Thunderbolt, and never worry about having to look back.
