Need your advice. I am purchasing a Vortex PST for long range hunting. Should I get the 4-16 or 6-24? My thoughts on the 6-24 are that I could use it for judging big mulies and not have to drag my Swro spotting scope all the time?
Thanks

Re: Which Vortex PST ?????????????

I dont know about you, but I prefer a hunting scope starting out at 4x over 6x just incase you kick one up, its easier to aquire it in the scope. If you are mainly looking at taking long range shots, then maybe the 6-24 would be good.

Re: Which Vortex PST ?????????????

From honest real world evaluations, go with the 6-24. The clarity in the scope alone is worth going that route. I too was leaning big time toward the 4-16, until the reviews showed that has a big downfall up against the 6-24.

I am not crazy about the overall length of the 6-24, but I am picky when it comes to the clarity of the glass. Go with the 6-24, even though it does start off at 6X.

That is where I am headed on my order today.

Re: Which Vortex PST ?????????????

From what I've been able to observe, the whole rumor about the optical quiality in the 4-16 being worse then the 6-24 is exactly what it is, a rumor. I've been able to look though both, and both were great. Remember that everyone's eyes are different, and not having the correct parralax setting or reticle focused correctly could give someone a different representation of a scope.

Re: Which Vortex PST ?????????????

Yeah..... everyone I've talked to about them (I own a 4-16x) who has shot or owns both says that is totally a rumor. The only thing I did hear which contradicts what you're saying is that the 6-24x is a little foggy around the highest powers.

Re: Which Vortex PST ?????????????

What distances are you shooting when you hunt? Unless your shortest shot is at something around 200 yards, I'd say that a 6X bottom end is a bit over kill. 3 or 4X would be more appropriate. In any case, I have one of the 6-24X50s and it's a pretty big scope too.

Re: Which Vortex PST ?????????????

Well, if the 4-16 is really that clear when compared to the 6-24, then I will be sticking to the 4-16. Even though I normally put a sunshade on my scopes, that 6-24 is a LOOOONNNNGGGGG one.

Now, if I could only find someone that had a 4-16 FFP MIL in stock and ready to ship... then I would be SET!!

It is not very often that I have the funds in hand to do such a thing.

Camera Land has them in stock, according to their website. They are good guys and hide sponsors-I ordered one this morning.
