I grew up in the woods of S Florida and those large orb weavers are plentiful especially among the coastal mangroves I had a great fear of them as a kid but they are not aggressive or venomous (to humans) unless you are an insect/bug but they create giant webs to catch their prey. Very impressive species but mostly harmless unless you have arachnophobia I suppose, but I too would like to have an excuse for a "flamethrower" LOL........

What really astounds me is you candyasses talking about "having an excuse" to buy a flamethrower.

The only reason you need to buy a flamethrower is because you want a flamethrower... Because it's a fucking flamethrower.

Added note: The last time I researched it, there was no federal prohibition on ownership of flamethrowers... No tax stamp, no forms, nada... But don't get caught with napalm. Which is a moot point since diesel, bunker fuel, or any fuel oil will work just fine.

Journalistic sensationalism strikes again. Claims these things will hit the north and northeast finally this year, but they already colonized the south arriving via cargo ship 10 years ago. LOL. By the way Joros are a species of the Orb Weaver family. Completely harmless to humans and they eat a lot of the nasty critters like brown recluses, mosquitos, etc that get wrapped up in their Starlink style webs.

Only hazards presented by them are the webs, to dirt bike and ATV racers who might not be wearing full face helmets. Someone getting a face full of web might react out of surprise and cause a crash of the other riders behind them. Has happened before. Wearing face helmets will prevent that. Joro and orb webs can also be harvested by outdoor gear mfgs and used to create extremely tough construction jackets and pants...

I spent a few days wading around the Everglades deep parts. We just carried a long twig held up in front of us while walking through areas like that, often chest high in water. At night, you had to peel your hat and clothes off as everything was held together with spider web.

I was more concerned about gators and snakes, though we did alright in that department.

We have massive golden orb aka banana spiders here all the time - I always thought they were nonvenomous. And yes they are four inches- at least and have massive webs - they extended between my shrubs often.
