Hello everyone,

Who offers ar15 barrels chambered in 6mm Grendel? I've narrowed down my next build to that cartridge and would like to pick up a barrel soon.

I'm aware of black hole/ Columbia river and ar performance so far but would like to see what other options are readily available for barrels?

Thanks for any recommendations

At a road block already.

Ar performance only offers a 20" barrel and I'm pretty set on 22".

blackhole weaponry has what I want but they quoted 8-12 weeks to get it out to me. Only so much decent shooting weather in my neck of the woods.

I up for any other suggestions?

McGowan offers the chambering but they are 10 weeks out.

Why don't you just go with the FatRat??
I honestly didn't research the "rats" very much due to the fireforming requirement. I don't get a lot of free time to shoot/reload and after playing with a 223AI I just didn't feel it was worth it.

Fast google search shows that fat rat may be easier to get a barrel for? Similar to the 243LBC except with a blown 40* shoulder? Are there issues with semi autos feeding the 40* case once the brass is fire formed?

Thanks for thinking outside the narrow box I proposed

Both of the cartridges you listed are reload only, so you're going to have to reload one way or the other.

You need to call up Lee Wells and talk to him about the 6mm FaRrat he invented it. There is absolutely nothing complicated about the fire forming process, in fact my fire forming load is the most accurate load I've developed yet. All you do is down size the neck of a Grendel case in the FatRat sizing Die, and load it like you would any other cartridge. Lee Wells is an outstanding guy and he will take the time to explain everything to you and detail, his wait times are short and his quality of work is outstanding.

I just did exactly this ^^^. Lee was great to talk to.

I did too. The only thing I'd change is to go with the Kreiger barrel and +2" forward gas hole. I'm happy I went with 22" length and I had him do .750 barrel in case I wanted to try match aperture front sights.

Care to elaborate on the +2 forward gas hole? I have planned to do a 22" barrel also but wanted the gas block to be under a 15" rail for aesthetic reasons.

A Rifle +2" gas system delays unlocking of the bolt carrier.

+1 for Accurate & Reliable Rifle as well. Last year I used one of his 223 uppers to get 3rd in the high power championship and picked up a few trophies. I had only shot the upper maybe 5 matches prior to taking it to Camp Perry, so I'm sure in the right hands (not mine) it could've won the whole thing. http://www.accurateandreliablerifle.com/testimonials.html

A couple of weeks ago I had them upgrade me to a 6mm fat rat and on my first trip to the range I'm finding it will shoot 1/2 moa with fire forming loads, literally with zero testing or load development. I have no reservations about using it in local / regional matches with those loads, though if I were shooting for trophies I would do some actual load work to tighten it up.

Wouldn't an adjustable gas block allow me to slow the unlocking time? I left a message for Lee today but haven't heard back from him yet

You should read Zediker's book and blog on this if you are really interested in learning about gas systems. The adjustable gas block is a great tool, but not the answer to everything.

Final verdict: ordered a 6 fat rat varmint off Lee. Thanks for all the recommendations and information in this thread. I'm leaning primarily towards young manufacturing for their chrome bolt but plan on doing a little more research.

Cheers

I didn't know Young made Grendel BCGs, if they do I'm sure it will work nicely.. I would strongly encourage you to spend the coin on a JP Enhanced Lomas Grendel BCG and pair it with a Adjustable GB and JP SCS... Top it off with a APA MB and you will be in Shooting heaven.

here is the 6mm FR Lee put together for me, it's a MK12 MOD 0 Style.. IMG_20160808_190308096.jpgIMG_20160808_190229600.jpg

They do but there's not a ton of data on them. Looks like a quality unit with good specs.

I have a regular Mid west carrier laying around I had planned on using and I did order a adjustable block just in case I need it. I'm undecided on brake and spring system. I just built a buddies rifle with a SCS and it's nice but I'm not convinced it's worth the price (at least yet).

As for the muzzle break I'm still researching. I've owned several but have never tried a mad scientist and may just opt to use this ar as an excuse to get one. I personally feel muzzle brakes are over priced for what they are but they make a big difference in the "feel" of the gun. There was a JP brake knock off design that I thought would function great for the price but I forget the name of it.

As for Muzzle Breaks American Precision Arms Gen2 Little Bastard is probably on of the Top 5 for recoil reduction. My newest AR build I'm running the JP Lomas BCG, JP SCS, SLR Adjustable Gas Block, and the APA Gen 2 Little Bastard MB. And when firing my Reticle doesn't even flinch..

I'm holding out for a 22 Grendel from ar15performance. After a buddy and I did a little research, the arp barrels use a Grendel bolt and only run JP bolts as I feel they are the best. The BHW barrels use 7.62x39 bolts...
