Gunsmithing Who should I have machine M-16 extractor in bolt

Ok guys, who do you recommend to machine in an m-16 extractor in my Remington 700 SA .473 bolt? Keep in mind I paid good money to have a Sako style extractor machined by some "famous" people and it just pops out every now and then. Is it fixable as a Sako style? Will the m-16 extractor be adaptable with the Sako cut in already? Let me know.

I may be off base, but if it is a respected smith, why not call him up and tell him your troubles and say that you would like to have it replaced with an M16 extractor?

I would suggest Chad Dixon, GAP, APA, Roscoe, Spartan Tactical, or Mark Gordon

There is a good chance that you will also need to open the barrel counterbore up for the mini 16 extractor.
It is not JUST bolt work to switch to a mini 16 extractor...

I've found that on a std bolt face, the m16 extractor works fine without opening up the counterbore in the barrel. The magnums are a different story.

For the cost of shipping the bolt to/from, parts, labor, etc. . . you'd prolly be really close in cost to just ordering a bolt from PTG.

Will dave match headspace if you send him the old bolt?
I suspect the OP was not looking to rebarrel...

I doubt he will, however I'd be willing to bet HS would be very close. Maybe a pinch on the tight side. Lapping and/or a quick spin in the lathe would fix that.

randall you replaced a bolt for me almost a year ago. my rem. extractor ripped out due to lack of material on the coned bolt face.

i asked dave on the phone if he would match headspace if i sent the old one in. he just kept repeating that my gunsmith can just shave off the back of the lug.

so no. at least not for me he wouldnt.

hahaha, I was just going to bring up the time I had to do a bolt replacement and dave would not match headspace.

why not insist on the original smith to fix your shit. If he is a "famous" smith then he can do the job properly. Lay down the law on the bottom line!! Or do what chad said. Sell your old bolt to recoup some of your cost. If your bolt is sellable. I bet a heavier spring under that extractor may fix your trouble though???? Lee

I'm going to pull it down and order a new large Sako extractor kit form PTG and do it myself. Guys a little more about this one. It is important to me as this was my first rifle, it is three generations in my family so replacing the bolt really isn't an option. It is also the rifle my daughter has started shooting in matches so it's forth generation now.

On selling off a bolt and buying a new one, what's the value of a factory 700 .308 bolt? Used vs. New? I was checking online and couldn't find anyplace that sells Remington factory bolts.

I would try a heavier spring first. It fixed the one I have. Springs are cheap. Good luck.
