Well the title pretty much says it - who does the extra step of K-Phos before GunKote?

Do you spray or dip?

I never had a problem with GunKote alone, but thought I might as well go the extra and use the K-Phos as well. The only thing I have seen is that my very "flat" black now has a very slight semi-gloss look.

Others???

I use K-Phos before GunKote-Just spray on with my air brush prior to coating-I cure it in the oven at 150 prior to Gunkote-Beware of the gloves you use as it will melt the latex type(if my memory serves me right I was wearing surgical type)if you touch it when its still tacky-Will leave glove goo on your firearm-Used no gloves once and fingerprints showed up easily-Ask me how I know-Stating the obvious but handle parts carefully after application and prior to drying-Does dry fast within a few hours if you air dry-KG states if adds a level of protection and helps GunKoat adhere-I never felt it affected the color I was using-3 different versions of black

Re: Who Uses K-Phos with GunKote?

Been using Gunkote for 7yrs now and never had any problems. I doubt you need it. I sprayed a set of motocross forks for a buddy and they are holding up awesome. Cant see it ever coming off a rifle if prepped properly.

Re: Who Uses K-Phos with GunKote?

Thanks guys - I've been using it for about 3 years now and never had a problem either. Then I saw the K-Phos and added it for that "extra level of protection" and my flat black turned more semi-flat which prompted me to ask around.

The K-Phos is terrible smelling when spraying - glad I have a strong exhaust hood.

I may just go back to straight GunKote as it never gave me any problems.

Re: Who Uses K-Phos with GunKote?

I've only used GunKote a few times, but started with KPhos and it seemed like I was much more likely to get moleskin and uneven finishes than if I just went straight from blasting->cleaning->GunKote.

Re: Who Uses K-Phos with GunKote?

I think the k-phos is just needed for stainless steel to help etch the surface for better was adhesion. Thats all I ever used it for. As far as the semi flat look, if you let the metal cool off too much before applying the coating it will have a sheen. I the metal is preheated to around 100-110 degrees before applying the coating, it will flatten out better.

Dusty - I never had the semi look until I used the K-Phos.

I sprayed a few parts with and without side by side same treatment other than K-Phos and it clearly showed a difference.

It isn't bad - it just isn't as flat. Maybe I'm too picky - flat black isn't all the same for me.

Ratbert - +1 on "much more likely to get moleskin and uneven finishes" as well
