BUMP lets keep this thread alive
this is my next project rifle
think im going to use a MAK kit with a PRS and a APA bipod
no idea what caliber, twist or barrel length yet
not sure if i want exotic 338lm or 375 chetac or maybe something a little more common and cheaper
always looking for input and advise
lets see some more pics and builds please
looking for ideas and hints
the more help the better
anyone have a used MAK for sale hint hint

Earlier in this thread is a pic of my MAK with the 28" barrel.

Here's a pic of it with the new Schneider Tubb contour 26".It handles way better!Especially in offhand shooting.It weighs about 3 lbs less than it did before.

It's chambered in 6x47 lapua,a wildcat cartridge based off 6.5x47L.It sends a 115 grain bullet at 3100 fps.Twist is 7.5.The weight is 16.5 lbs with scope.

It's my favorite rifle.Ergonomic and well balanced.Holds 12 rounds with one in the chamber.Shoots .4" consistently.Recoils about the same as a 223 because of the muzzle brake.

I have had a R-1 for about three years now. The things I like about it is the adjustability of the stock. I can offset the buttplate left or right and up and down and forward and backward. Add to this the cheek peice is adjustable left and right ( a little) and up and down with a thumb wheel. It (R-1) has turned into a switch barrel gun for me and I switch barrels a couple time a year with it. In the winter time its the 6BR and in the summer its a 6mm SuperX ( 243 Improved) It is a prone rifle only set up for NRA comps. If I where a younger man just getting involved in NRA comps I would go the Ellisio R-5 route or the MAK set up. You wont know how important it is to have the adjustable buttstock assy, until you start shooting the sitting rapid fire and the standing part of XTC shooting. Its invaluable to get the gun to fit you instead of the other way around.

I feel I can offer this advice for what your perameters are based off your orginal post. Dont take this the wrong way as I just want you to know Im not some mall ninja spewing garbage on the net. I currently hold Nine national NRA prone records at 300,500 and 600 yards with Matalic and scope sights. ( sending in 6 more after last weekend) Hold a High Master clasifacation in Long range and XTC. (The later done with a Serice rifle) Have a Dist Riflemans badge. Made it to the shoot off in the Coveted LEECH cup this year at Camp Perry where some how I finished in the top 15 shooters in the whole Long Range agg.

If your going to shoot NRA match rifle, do yourself a favor and get a good adj. butt stock. If your going to bang steel in the desert you can go some other route.

It's a Nightforce 5.5-22x56 with NF rings.

To the AR-10 hanguard option: yes it would be nice, but not really nessesary if you can just add somr picatiny rails in the slots. Then you don't have wasted rail space.

Just a thought.....

Damn...

My competitive shooting is limited to XTC w/ a AR A2. Stalled at expert. I'm certain my issues are skill/discipline vs equipment. But, I'm getting older and also looking to get into longer range.

Here are my tubeguns. Both glued. One is meant to be a smaller rifle for easy handling and one is mostly for shooting of the ground. But since everything is fully interchangeble between the two i can choose which components to use. I think the best things about them is the straight recoil and the possibility to choose buttstock. Its also very easy to switch barrels in about 5minutes.

Here is the original tubegun that was finished in early 1999. An F-Class rifle in caliber 22-250.

The action was a 722 Remington, and everything adjustable due to being a prototype. Several other protos were made with the 700LA, 700SA and Model 7. The latter, due to not using a bolt stop (none did), would eject a loaded 6.5X.284.

The forerunner of what is known as the tubegun was an old and slick 700SA (built in 1984) that was sleeved, tubed and had a conventional buttstock. This rifle was built as both a SS (22-250) and repeater (.308). The rifle was well known in Canada as "The Mongrel" for being so ugly, and some real good stories were written about it on the old Fullbore Board.

Got lotsa photos of building the protos. None were machined from tubing, but started as solid aluminum stock. Quite a feat on my meager machinery. The rifle in these photos was clear anodized in a garage operation and looks this good today.

I don't have a tubegun so take this for what it's worth, but I think you just screw them in?

Edit: I see now there are a few kits which basically include everything but the action, barrel, trigger and scope for $700-1000.

Is there anyone that sells assembled tube guns? Maybe a "on-the-low-end" model?

Do you have to use the ultra high rings with these?

I can't believe this thread is going on 1.5 yrs old and still out there...

I ended up building one on a MAK kit w/ a Lawton action I got here thru a GB from NAG (you'll get mixed reviews on him and those, but I'm happy as a pig in shit FWIW).

I ended up using LaRue LT-123 rings, which are quite high. BUT, I did that (meaning QD, not height) for a specific reason. I switch between irons and scope quite often. I'm a paper puncher. If you want advice from somebody who uses a 2-way range, then you really, really need to ask somebody other than me.

Though I'm quite happy w/ my MAK, I still haven't had a lot of opportunity to stretch it out yet. Because I'm such a tight-ass, it took me over a year to "build", and since then the weather has sucked.

My guess is that accuracy depends much more on you than whatever you're shooting. if you're asking that question, then it doesn't matter ;-)

There's a lot of guys (and gals) that shoot them at the IN HP matches, but we're pretty much ground zero for MAK.

YMMV, but I love mine.
