Why are soldiers doing this?

I am seeing an increasing amount of soldiers that for some reason or another are walking around the bases over here with 20 round Pmags in. you are allowed to carry one magazine with you while you do your daily work and activities so you carry 10 less rounds? I have talked to armorers and they know nothing on the subject. Only reason I would see these being useful is for getting into and out of the turret in an ASV and we don't have them here. It's not like your carrying a large amount of weight around with you or anything and it is grunts and pogs alike.

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

I don't know about soldiers now days, but in my time, when the 30 rounders first came out, we found there were a lot less problems with the 20 rounders.

I have a couple 30 rounders but for the same reason I don't use them.

Plus the fact that I shoot my ARs in competition, mainly High Power. The 30 rounders get in the way in position shooting. Round count doesn't matter if you only load your mags with eigher 2 or 8 rounds.

Take into account, all my AR mags are military type.

Again, I don't know if its true today, but that's the reason I used 20 rounders.

If don't take long to change a mag on an AR anyway, so I don't see any big advantage of the 30 rounders. I just make sure any mag I use drops free do to gravity when I push the button.

Tak into account I'm and old man now, I don't nor will I use an AR or any other rifle in combat.

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

Because they are FOBITS. (people who never leave the Forward Operating Base)

Only time 20 rounders were used by us is for our SPR. The 30's wouldn't allow you to get in a good prone position.

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

I always carried a 20 rounder in the weapon and 30 rounders in my mag pouches. Just carried better, slung better, fit in the HMMWV door rack better. M60's and saws are for high volume fire!

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

I agree that 20 in the rifle with 30 rounders on hand would be the ideal way to go. Easier to maneuver, carry and get in a stable prone position.

I'll take the extra 10 rds... and I have seen combat (just saying my peace). The other comments about being able to set up in a secure position without the mag obstructing proper positioning are valid (although that's a far cry from what kind a bind your IBA with sapi plates puts you in).

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

This isn't a case of just FOBITS doing this. It is infantry and mechanics alike. Maybe they just want their weapon to stick out in the rack so it's easier to find when grabbing them at the end of the day. this is a situation were you carry around only one magazine no back ups while one the FOB. I used to carry a 30 in mine and a 30 in my pocket. I did however have extensive access to the ranges to shoot on and often went shooting on a moments notice. As far as posting on multiple forums I wanted to see what the difference in response would be between the 2.

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

If they are not supposed to be doing this then I see no reason to start a mountain of a problem from a mole hill just to address a concern. Here there is a certain anonymity maintained to a point that preserves a soldiers stress at least over getting yelled at over something stupid because someone addressed something that they were doing wrong. I address this with soldiers that I meet that I have the time to address it. One on one as some are allowed and some are not.
Bring something this small up with a CoC and you have created work for something that could be taken care of by lower level persons. I have not yet seen anybody over a single E5 that partakes in this practice over here so would like to keep it at or below that level if at all possible. Life is smooth over here if maintained to a certain standard. Take care of issues without disturbing that and it can be counted as a win.

lol..as I look at my 30 round PmaG in my m4..I am in Kandahar and more bullets you can carry the better

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

Whatever they do I'm encouraged they have some choice (if done for good reasons) and good gear. I hated packing my cotton duck mummy bag and shelter half knowing REI had better/lighter alternatives readily available but I was forbidden from using them.

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

i keep my 30 round mag in but i don't keep 30 rounds in the mag because they tend to jam up with 30 rounds in. Even with maintenance and everything those junk metal mags are such crap. I'm not risking my gun jamming up because I wanted to carry a few extra rounds in the mag. Is this just me?

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

You can hit the deck lower with 20rd mags, 30's only let you get so low as they protrude a considerable amount from the bottom. Apart from that and weight savings, its just personal preference.

I think this is the case for most soldiers. Having a lower profile (especially when prone) and less jamming than 30s (myth?) are just bonuses used to justify the choice. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

ROFL, FOBIT, thats the answer to this question..... When the thing you HAVE to carry around all day already weighs to much it never hurts to shed a few pounds. Not everyone gets to go outside, but everyone must carry a weapon.

I remember a couple of years ago I was going to Dinner at one of the DFAC's at Anaconda and 2 Army chicks came in sporting Rubber Ducks...

Re: Why are soldiers doing this?

*shrug*........ I use a GI 20 rounder in the rifle, and carry the 30's on my vest.

I just like the profile of the rifle with the 20 in it; partially for the some of the earlier reasons others posted.
