Samaritan's Purse is one of the few organizations that I support financially; they do good work and aren't in it for the money. We heard from a nurse working for them in Italy and they're helping a lot of the elderly COVI19 patients that have been refused care at hospitals and most of the Italians are grateful they are there.

Going back to the OP's question of "why", I'm sure you've heard the term "preaching to the converted" as a way to describe a relatively useless task. Christianity has done some of its best work by providing essential services where it wasn't necessarily welcome; that's the very essence of attracting new converts. Maybe, just maybe, a medical effort such as the one provided by Samaritan's Purse does some good work, demonstrates the positive effects of Christianity, and wins over some new followers. Yes, it's a long shot, but it potentially has a much greater upside than providing services to those who are already followers.

Christians and conservatives both like to lament their shrinking numbers, but then don't want to do the hard work of attracting new followers (who, by definition, don't currently believe the same things). We'd rather just sit around with like-minded people and bitch about everyone else.
