Why do they x-ray guns on military flights?

Watching the end of "battleground Afghanistan" and as the guys are getting ready to go home you see them putting their rifles on the x-ray belt and then they walk through the metal detector. Why?

Are they looking for ammo or knives or some such?

Might be looking to see that the internals are not being smuggled out. A friend's brother was a mechanic in the army and a few guys tried to smuggle internals so they could put them in their rifles at home.

I never ran into any scanners on my trip through. My rifle stayed out with me the whole time, and Customs MPs just had us dump all of our stuff and looked through it. Though that started when a buddy of mine from B-troop got caught with AK 47 parts in his B-Bag.

Maybe it is looking for AK parts or some such. They know you have the select-fire rifle and will want that back but if you happen to have some select fire AK bits in your bag...?

Added a pic to the post so people don't think I'm imagining things.

Essentially these charter flights are still civilian airliners governed by FAA regulations. As such, the same rules apply for PAX processing. There are no separate lines or rules for mil members. The regs that AMC (who charters the flights) are bound to abide by were written by the FAA. Theyre not looking for anything specific, just following procedure and looking for things not already cleared. FAa and Customs regs were not written with the military in mind.

So never mind the reality of the situation, let's just follow procedure in defiance of all reason. Typical. It would make more sense if they were actually looking for something, like the aforementioned AK parts.

To be fair, there are still things that you cannot bring aboard an airplane. Things like hand grenades, ammo, etc. Theyre looking for anything you are not supposed to be transporting via the cabin or the aircraft at all. They probably wouldnt know an AR part From an AK if you made a chart for them anyway. Porters are not weapons experts and not customs agents. There are other places along the route that other specially qualified personnel will check for that stuff.

my mom is a flight attendant and back in Desert Storm flew volunteer flights to get troops to Saudi. She said the troops hand carried their rifles but had to check any knives in their luggage. FAA rules make a lot of sense

The amc flights are typically what is considered 121 supplemental and don't follow the same rules that normal 121 security rules. You don't have to clear any kind of security on supplemental 121 just like if it was a private charter, the cockpit door can stay open, etc... it may be the airlines policy or customs policy but regular tsa regulations do not affect supplemental 121 flights.

My kit was x-ray'd on a Brit 130 flight from Bastion to KAF one time. They didn't care about the 15 mags, M4 or M9, or even the pen flares and HC smokes; they didn't allow anything that went "boom" on the bird. What sucked was trying to strip myself down of all metal to get through the detector, then put myself back together again.

What was funny was on another in country flight system (will remain nameless), my buddy was holding his M4/203, had a vest full of visible HEDP and frags, and the flight security asked him "Sir, do you have anything explosive?" The response of "What fucking part of me doesn't look explosive... " was priceless.

You guys have this all wrong,

They Were Just Checking You For Flares,, YOu Know That Air Lines Have A NO SMOKING Policy, lolololololololol
