Why double sling studs?

I see more rifles with double sling studs and I'm not sure of the purpose?

Is that to mount a single and a bipod on separate studs? Or are there bipods/accessories that require two studs for extra stability, etc?

You guessed it correctly. One is for the bipod and one is for a sling. Bipod on the forward stud and sling the rear one.
