Working gun shows lately I've come to realize its not the position, its the rifle. Any heavy barrelled rifle is now a .50 cal. Any "tactical" stock on a rifle is now an Assault Rifle. Heaven forbid there's a paint job on a rifle. Folks get all antsy looking around for a "Sniper."

You have a couple of grand into a rifle, invariably some moron is gonna comment, "Whadda ya need that rifle for, elephants?? hu-ha-hu-ha-ha-ha!"

A few years back, I spent the most educational Sunday ever sitting in the booth of an optics dealer at a now-defunct gun show that was the biggest in this area for decades.

He was going to do an install for me, and I didn't mind waiting, as I thought it might be kind of cool sitting on the other side of the table watching the crowd go by.

Yeah, right. He had a damned .50 cal. Barrett sitting there.

Never have I seen such a succession of complete fucking idiots, many of them looking strongly like prohibited individuals who had no business even being there. It was an absolute petting zoo for fucktards, and "Please Don't Touch" either meant nothing to them or was beyond their reading level.

I spent the day almost feeling paranoid because I wasn't constantly standing up in a better posture to deal with the possibility of an intrusion. People literally leapt towards the booth to grab at the Barrett and there was more than one idiot who tried to sneak or have sneaked a surreptitious photo with it.

Probably the worst were the father/son teams, the fathers having no control over their kids, who were fueled to the top of their short brains with all manner of video game idiocy about things that they had never seen in real life before, much less tried to snatch up off of a table. "Dad, wow, it's really heavy, it isn't like it is in COD!" Well, no shit.

Seven hours of BO, cheap breakfast farts, and honky-tonk halitosis, but nothing in the prone. God help us all if these people were to actually make it to a range, much less bring anything besides their greasy fingers.

A local range here in S.Cal is always packed before 10AM since they are prob. the only public range here that has steel targets set out to 600 yards, nice RSO folks, strick rules, nice restrooms (not the portable potties), and mostly pretty nice shooters.

We always get there before 9am so we have a spot, laid out my mat and start shooting. Around 11am, all the benches were taken, and some were waiting for benches. One dude came up to me and say, you aint using that bench are you? I said, no, Im shooting prone. Then he wants to take that bench. I said, sorry sir., the range rule is one shooter per bench. "thats fxxking bullshxt!!" he said. I replied:sorry, I didn't make up the rules. He then said: I'm taking this bench! @#$% more profanities. I replied: No you are not, I suggest you to talk to those RSOs. And, come earlier next time if you don't have the patient to wait. @#$%!! beep beep beep~~~~ next thing we saw was the RSO kicked his ass out of the range.

My brother pulled his Tikka T3 Tactical .308 out his case and put it on the bench one day at the range. Some guy beside us walked over and said, "Wow, is that a Barrett?"

"Yes, everything that has a long barrel and a Nightforce scope is a Barrett."

The guy ended up being a pretty nice guy, but we still have to laugh when that story comes up.

I had a fellow buy a Sharps 45-70 from me and wanted to shoot. I have a range off my back porch and we went out and he did not ever hit the backboard and said there must be something wrong with it. I sat down and put two shots about 1" apart just above the bull at 100 yards and told him nothing wrong with the gun. He left happy.

You know the second he left with the rifle the story changed from the truth (above) to they guy who bought the rifle put five rounds in half an inch at 300 yards with it, and beat up the seller on the price.

We were shooting in the desert down here (prone) getting my 30/06 dialed in at various distances, confirming dope out to 600 yards in 50 yard increments on my steel AR500 elk target, we were also going to confirm dope with the Barrett from 500 yards back to a grand.

I was shooting with my bro-in-law who also had a few of his rifles out that day. First we had a guy drive down and park in front of our target...just kind of hanging out there, so I rode down on the four wheeler and explained that he was down range (He had driven right past us laying prone on the ground behind rifles) So then he came back behind our firing line and was bull-shitting us, we finally managed to get a few shots down range and I shit you not another truck drives right past us heading down range again and this guy pulls up to the elk target, looked at it for a second, then proceeded to back his truck up and start opening the tail gate, the fucker was going to load up my target!

The first guy who we had rousted out of there took off after them before I could even get on my fourwheeler and explained that there was people shooting at the target and "they had a BMG with them " I think we had only made it back to like 450 yards, so it wasn't like we were 2000 yards away with the Barrett where it wasn't obvious....The shit you see when you are out shooting! (We did have that happen on another ocasion I was shooting the Barrett and my buddy was shooting his 7 SAUM at 2K yards and some guys rode up to our targets and started to get their pistol gear out to shoot at our steel at point blank range, the targets were pretty big, it was my elk target and my 3'x3' AR500 plate.

My buddy got a picture through his spotting scope of one of the guys pissing next to our target....once again we had to ride down with the four wheeler to explain that there was some high caliber rifles aimed in that direction...they about shit when they found out where we were shooting from!)

You have to be on your toes shooting in the desert, there are always people out riding etc... usually we just cease fire until they are clear of the field of fire, but ocasionally they take too much of an interest in our steel!

My rant is simple; people on Long Island are kinda douches. In that they have much more money than common sense, and like to flash it. If I go to the local gravel-pit/range, the max distance is 200 yards; maybe out to 300 during one weekend a month that requires you reserving the whole range for a few hundred bucks. I usually go out and send a few down with the 308, but there are a good number of folks who drive in with a high end Lexus or Porsche, unload a .50BMG with a break, or, I shit you not, I've seen a a DTA-HTI in .375 Cheytac, and feel the need to throw 50 or 60 rounds downrange at 100 yards. They seem to especially enjoy setting up on the bench right beside yours, so you get that wonderful concussive blast from a cartridge intended for something twenty times farther off. More entertaining is when they can't manage to get sighted in on a 3" Shoot-N-C.


I am envious as hell of you folks who have serious room out west. Might want to attach a sign to the targets at 2000 yards with an empty piece of brass when you're firing. Something along the lines of "If you can read that, small artillery is inbound."

i dont know, but i do get guys standing behind me watching me shoot whenever i lay prone whether with rifle or carbine....

I was at the range by myself and this fellow drove up and set up about 4 points down from me. I was not paying him much attention and his first shot got my attention. A big ball of smoke and fire came out the end of the barrel so I watched him out of the corner of my eye and he was stuffing the barrel full of vasoline and then he would shoot it. Once again this big ball of fire and smoke and I went and asked what he was doing and he said he was just breaking this rifle in since he had just bought it and it needed to be greased up real good.
I told him if it was all right I would move my stuff down some so none of the parts that were going to blow up would get on me.
There are some real nuts out there!

Maybe that's just the way the guy is used to greasing his barrel...

At my range we're not supposed to ask, just be tolerant.
