My uncle was over there after his first trip to Vietnam in the early 60's. Yes he left Vietnam in '63.

He went to Germany, one of his stories was he learned Romanian in 6 easy weeks. If the war ever went hot he was to go there and cause trouble.

He said of germany in the early 60's that when you looked across to the soviet sector of Berlin it looked like the war ended yesterday. On the west side, every other european country. The wall was already there when he got there and it was just such a contrast.
