Why no Remington 700 in .22LR? (not 40-X)

Just wondering why Remington hasn't ever come out with a 700 model chambered in .22LR. I am already aware of the 40-X rifles, but they are single shot. It would be great if Remington made a rifle that was a 700 model in every aspect, but a repeater chambered in .22LR. Interchangeable stocks and triggers will all other 700 rifles.

Seriously wondering why they don't have one...

The Remington 504 reminds me of the 700, a few small differences but other than that its very close.

EDIT: never handled one but the 547 looks even closer than the 504.

The 504 hasn't been made for ~5 years and the 547 is a custom-shop gun, I believe (~$1K). I don't think either one can use Remington 700 triggers and stocks.

If they can make a .308 Remington 700 and sell it for $650 new (AAC-SD), you'd think a .22LR version of that same rifle would be at least as cheap as that. May as well go with a 40-X at that price, even if it's not a repeater.

Remingtons main market is fudds. They want a 22 that's light.

They actually did make some 40x repeaters in 22 LR but theres not a bunch of them out there.
Why did they not make them? Becouse it would make way to much sence! Hell, why did they stop making the 541T or S?

Do the 40-X have the same lug dimensions as the the 700? Wondering Cause if they do you could have a 700 action with a PT&G 40-X bolt.

I really like my CZ452 Varmit, as a quasi trainer, but I'd dearly love to have a Rem 700 in .22LR as well. Wishfull thinking on our parts though unless somebody convinces the powers that be at Remington that there is a significant market for this rifle.

I'm no gun smith. But would it be possible to make an after market bolt like a PTG in .22 and chamber a barrel blank for it?

Nothing like taking 2 years to answer this but "no" the dimensions aren't even close. Standard 700 has its lugs at the nose of the bolt. A 40-X has its lugs half way back. No way to interchange.

Ha, i never would have caught the age of the thread had you not said that!

Anyways, repeaters had alot of feeding issues, and a conversion has to be done thru the ATF since its a centerfire to rimfire. And Bill Calfee did do some on the xp100s but thats already a pistol action and all i have seen him do were kept as a pistol configuration.

I did buy a stiller lonestar (40x) clone and he was supposed to be coming out with a repeater but i think demand for other actions put that on the backburner.

As far as I know, the ATF doesn't give a rats rear whether it's a centerfire ro rimfire... they only care if the barrel on a rifle is replaced with a pistol (sub 16") barrel.

I'm sure the reason that Remington doesn't make one is that despite what folks on boards like this think, the market for a "full size", high quality, .22 rifle is statistically barely above "zero"... On their scale of marketing, virtually NO ONE would buy a $700 .22 Rimfire. Sure, folks HERE are going to chime in with "I'd buy one!", but that's like saying you'd find someone to buy a pair of fur lined handcuffs at a BDSM convention. Try selling a pair at your local clothing store, and see how many sell.

Same reason Winchester, when HANDED the contract to make more Winchester 52D/E rifles for the Army, turned it down flat... (this was in the mid '70's) They had no interest in making smallbore rifles any more, because no one bought them. They dumped the whole line of quality .22's.
Remington made the same decision when they dumped the 581, and 541X, and 40X line (outside of a few custom shop guns they sell at ridiculous prices).

Mossberg 44 or 144 .22lr is almost a full size & weight of a R700 rifle , heavy bull barrel 26"

I'm willing to bet one of the super talented smiths on here could probably custom make a bolt with a rimfire face on it that fits a 700 action. Then they'd have to fit a barrel aswell. ANYTHING is possible...with money. I just don't know if anyone would delve into that realm as the time and effort it would take would be terrible. The juice may not be worth the squeeze. But if anyone can do it, I'd say Chad Dixon, SAC, AZPrecision or black ops tech would be the guys that could pull it off... I'll be waiting gents!! Haha

Would you guys have bought one 2 years ago? Probably not. Not that ammo has basically doubled in price, if and when we can find it, it makes sense to shoot .22. The firearms manufactures will catch on to this soon enough. I foresee a ton of new options in 22lr in the near future.

My guess is because it would need around 800 in machining/rebarreling/chambering and gunsmithing to make it shoot right like the rest of the rifles in it's class( tikka, WIN 70, FN PBR)

On Remingtons scale of things, the few thousand rifles Cooper sells IS zero...
Didn't mean the demand was actually "zero", just that the numbers aren't enough for Remington to bother.

I think Pawprint2 is correct. They were discontinued in 2006. I was offered one a couple of years ago for $3500.00 maybe. That is if you say yes, maybe I'll sell it to you. I never saw it but they purportedly were from the custom shop. The model designation was 40-XR Custom Sporter.

Another good choice. I had one of these too and they are quite excellent.

Remington did have a model 700 in .22LR . It is called a Remington 40x Sporter. It had a 5 shot magazine. I purchased one in about 1973 for about $525. Now they are about $3500. Remington only made about 535 of the rifles. Unfortunately I sold mine NIB in about 1988 when I needed money for the family. I have a Remington 700C and the 40X Sporter looked much like the 700C.

I own a Rem 700 5R in .223 that I prefer over a .22LR. And for a practice gun, I really like .223 over .22LR. But if I where buying a .22LR, it would be Bergara even if Remmy made one.

I am working on a conversion for my 700.
It is a regular 700 in 22-250 ackley and it will switch to 22lr.

Waiting for some parts. Will update in about 2 months. That is If anyone gives a fuck. Lol
