The FN SPR was arguably the most overlooked tactical rifle of the time. Accurate, reliable, my favorite action and pretty reasonably priced for all the features. I would have loved for them to come with CDI bottom metal and a threaded barrel on the 24" model. 6.5x47 or creed would have been awesome.
I may be behind the times, but my two primary match rifles are FN actions in Manners stocks with PTG bottom metal. I wish FN would make a small FP can chamber in 6.5x47Lapua.

I think FN pushed themselves out of the market with the price (street price of $2400ish for a5m xp). I feel most going that price route look to custom builds. Having said that, I have an A1 with some 3,000 plus rounds through it and it has served me well.

As you may have gathered, there are two different PBRs being referred to. One is the earliest version, the PBR, that you evidently own. The other is the later PBR-XP. To confuse the issue even more, these were replaced by the TSR-XP. Here is a little background and the differences in the three.
PBR: built in USRAC on M-70 style receivers with flat bottom, two-lever triggers, three-position safeties, blade ejectors. At the same time, Winchester had a similar M-70 action the market along side their "Classic M-70". They had the hybrid CRPF bolts with the sliding plate extractor. Other than that, they were very similar to the SPRs in design but did not get the accuracy enhancements of the SPR line. PBRs delivered with a black Hogue stock and a non-fluted barrel with only a 4 round DBM. Barrel lengths ranged from the recoil-reduced 16" model up to the 24" version. They were only available in .308 Win.
PBR-XP: also made in USRAC, made to replace the PBR and enhance appeal. Same action but now with the CRF claw extractor. Came with an OD green Hogue stock, fluted barrel and DBM or hinged floorplate magazine. They could be had in .308 Win and .300 WSM with 24" barrel. Only the barrel is marked as "PBR-XP", not the receiver. If you are looking at a PBR-XP (with fluted barrel) with a black stock, it has been cobbled together by someone other than FNH. All PBR and PBR-XP Hogue stocks carry the FN logo on the pistol grip cap area.
TSR-XP: made in FN Manufacturing in Columbia, SC starting in 2010. Same basic rifle as the PBR-XP except with three-lever "MOA" trigger. Four models were available: .308 with 20 or 24 inch barrel and 4 round DBM, .300WSM with hinged floorplate and 24 inch barrel. The TSR-XP USA was an "Ultra Short Action" in .223 Remington. It came with a hinged floorplate magazine, smaller profile Hogue stock, 20 inch barrel and only came with the CRPF sliding plate extractor of the original PBR.
All PBR/PBR-XP/TSR-XP have hammer forged barrels, non-chrome lined. They all had the three position safety, flat bottom receiver and fixed blade ejector. They were meant to shoot no less than 1.5 MOA, but many, if not all, shot much better than that. All had Hogue Overmold stocks of one type or another with aluminum block bedding. They are good rifles in their own right, but make very good base for custom builds as a few on the Hide have done. The TBM Kit will bolt right into any of these rifles using the DBM magazine assembly. Some slight fitting inside the magazine well opening on the stock might be required to make the magazines drop free.

All of my M70's have been modded but I must say converting them to use AICS mag's was The best mod!

They are original design CRF receivers.
Everything else is just an imposter.
The owner of that site did all the work on my rifle, fit the Douglas blank, installed pillars, full beautiful bed job, bluing in a variety of finishes to meet original Winchester finishes....

Midwest recivers are indeed CRF. The rep I just spoke to stated as so and also said she would need to correct the product description to CRF. Might have to pick one of these up after my AIAT purchase. I really miss my SPR A1.

Cant recommend @pre64win enough. My coworker just notified my rifle is at the office. I will be fondling it shortly.
Only issue I can see for you is with a legacy receiver you will only get "standard" for the .308.
No "short action" receiver length offered back than.

Just skimmed and subscribed to your Win 70 build thread. Their work and detail put in to that rifle seems to rival a TacOps build (the bedding jn particular is smooooooth). Stellar work, looks like a great company to deal with.

My first love was Springfield 1903s.
All a Pre 64 Winchester is is a Springfield 03 made for commercial sales without the military over engineering.
Im interested to see how a well bedded flat bottom does against mil spec.
Im willing to bet a modern chassis/synthetic stock would really make these capable of holding their own.
Same. I’ll eventually find an 03a3 with a “C” stock to own one day. Those are very capable actions. I’d like to see one (1903a3) bedded in a McMillian or Manners stock, CDI AICS bottom metal, Bartlien barrel, S&B PMII, etc. and see how it would perform agaist a long actioned Defiance built to the same specifications.
I’d bet that accuracy would be nearly identical, with the 03 edging out the modern Defiance (or most any Rem. 700 pattern reciever) in reliability.
They've also got McMillian A-3 stocks for $250.
That's be a pretty good start to a somewhat budget build.
That's just classic FN tactics....The A5xp is the newest SPR variant, and of course very few have been made, so the pricing is high for those few that are out there.
There are pre-XP SPR's (older A1's, A5's) that can be found for ~$1,300-$1,600, which is decent considering what you're getting in that rifle. The higher-end Remington 700's will go for a similar pricing (though I question whether they warrant that kind of pricing). Midwest Gun Works has routinely offered good deals on the older FN SPR A1's ($1,200 or so). Good deals can be found with a little patience.
Honestly, I think plenty of people would be willing to buy SPR's if FN would just be a little more proactive about offering caliber options, barrel lengths, accessories. It took FN long enough just to offer a SPR with a threaded muzzle cap.

Got the first actions in. They are indeed crf. Got delayed ( fuck a duck ATF) so I can't test them to my fn mcmillian stocks and tbm bottom metal yet. Hope is everything drops in without fitting.

Second will be a hunting rifle or some sort depending on what calibers I can get to work in it.

Do you run the FN mags/DBM? If so, why those versus the CDI and AI mags?
Who is your smith for the actions as well?
I run the TBM System. My first SPR a1 a decade and a half ago, had the DMB system. It was a poorly designed mag system that had feeding issues. I had that gun converted by CDI to use AICS mags. My next SPR a5 also had the DBM system.
When MWS was blowing out their FN stocks, I picked up some TBM systems with A3/A4 stocks cheap. I converted over my DBM to TBM and am really happy with it. They feel as well as my AICS mags, but are double stack like AW mags so I get 10 rounds in a shorter profile. They feed great.
The other benefit is its drop in. Now here is the catch. The action screws that come are not the right size. Perhaps FN figured they would be shortened by a gunsmith, but the screw when torqued, ends up into to bolt either binding it in place, or preventing it from closing.

The plan is to sent it off to get either KMW or LRI cheekpeice installed , barrel/chambered and coated shortly. Hopefully I can get LRI to do it, but in the past chad told me he didnt like working on stocks that aren't inletted/bedded by them.
Most smiths can work on a 700 because it takes almost no skill. CRF, flat bottom actions require a higher level of understanding and usually some fixtures to be able to mount the fucker in a lathe. I would stick with someone like LRI, GAP, SAC, PVA who l have experience with CRF actions such as the mausingfield and winchester 70.
