Rifle Scopes Will thermal ever be affordable or work with ACOG?

I never bought night vision b.c its not developed enough for me to spend 3-5k. Will thermal ever be as affordable as Gen 3? Can you navigate through the woods on foot and or drive with tree cover with Thermal? I was wondering if regular NV had an edge for navigation and driving.

I would drop the money right now on a PVS if it worked with an ACOG scope. I was under the impression that they are on different sight plains. I really want one to play with but cant justify it without an ACOG ability.

Do any of you guys own or have experiance fielding the Gen 3 or Thermal?

3. Regular NODs can "see" through glass, glass acts as a barrier to heat signatures.

The guys that I talked with said that the PVS14 seemed easy to break during SOI. I would order it today if I could use it with an ACOG and open sights.

As an USMC armorer and maintainer of AN/PVS-14's....If the shit a Marine used got treated like he spent his own $ on it, I'de be out of a job.

Thats the same thing that I was thinking. I wouldnt drop more than 3 grand on NV/ Thermal. I doubt thermal will ever be affordable for me. I want the NV for a toy but my one buddy tells me im waisting my money on something thats going to break and require alot of service.

? I have never talked with a guy that loved NV. They essentially say that it is better than nothing but not worth the $$. Civilians and Swat guys seem to be in love with these things. I might just wait for it to become even better and cheaper.

The funny thing about his handle is that no Marine would ever call himself an ex-Marine (ex0311) there are former Marines not ex marines... or so I have been told.

The PVS-14s are great systems! I have used them extensively and have never broken them (I did abuse the crap out of them). I carried my PVS-14s in a soft case while in Baghdad, they were thrown around, dropped, banged into crap, dropped some more, had stuff dropped on them and I didn't have issues.
The "older" PVS-14's had a sucky battery cap that was prone to failure if you weren't careful but that was fixed and the newer ones are great.

Then you have never spoken with anyone who has actually USED NV.

If you can't see it you can't kill it. Night vision under most circumstances turns night into day. It's still a problem in buildings and caves where there is NO light (NVG's still need some light to function) but that's why even the old AN/PVS-7B's had an IR illuminator built in (the "shoot me here" light).

It seems you have no understanding of night vision or thermal.

And since you were an "ex" 0311, what was the color of the boathouse at LeJuene?

I am not an 11 anymore hence the "ex"... I dont understand why I am being called a kid? I went to the Island not CL. I have never been trained on night vision. I have only played around with gen 1 that was a few years ago.

OK, since you haven't been to Lejuene, what color was the target shed at Pendleton?

Oh, and Night Vision is TO&E to a Rifle Company. So if you were actually a Marine Rifleman in the last decade you were issued night vision.

What unit did you EAS from?

I absolutely hate PVS-14s

"Hey Thaxton, my day lens cover ripped." (Actualy, they dont know its called a day lens cover, they call it "That black cap thing").

"Hey Thaxton, my power knob bent!" (Dont ever try to bend one of these back).

"Hey Thaxton, my eye cup fell off."

Come to think of it, they dont claim any of this stuff happened while they were using them, but that it "Was just like that when I got them!"

They also LOVE to mangle the sacraficial lenses, that way they cant be removed/replaced.

Yes sir, 2nd EOM on PVS-14's and I hate every minute of it.

In any case, it seems the lad sealed his own fate with the above comment. Any grunt (and many wingers) can tell the difference between "The Island" and Camp Lejeune. As an aside...these two bases were never referred to by these names. When I and my compadres referred to them, they were Parris Island or PI, or Camp Lejeune or just Lejeune.
