Will this make a good long range gun?

Hello I am looking at a 338 lapua that is a custom gun . It's a cz550 Safari classics receiver .30" bartlein 1-9.5 twist heavy barrel and a Mcmillian Baker's special stock .barrel was fitted to the action by Bartlein
What I'm wondering is this going to be a good long range gun or is this more of a hunting rifle ?

no reason the Cz550 wont make a good precision rifle.....

assuming all the work was done well, it should shoot just fine.

I was not sure since I couldn't find one other person usuing the cz550 for a build on here . I know cz makes some nice rifles.

Don’t get too wrapped up about the name and what it’s intended or Primary role “was”. I think that rifle could be a hammer. You believe so too, or you would not be here asking. ? The heart of a rifle is the barrel, and Bartlein is absolutely one of the best. I agree with mcameron, if the work is done right, there is nothing that the CZ can’t do. You also won’t see your rifle on the line with 20 other guys shooting.

I’d absolutely buy/shoot it, with the caveat of shooting it first.

I think the uniqueness alone would be fun.

Please advise us what you do, and let us know how she does. I, for one, am very interested.

How far is long range, if it's under 1500 I think there are better choices than a .338.

I would say (conditional upon absence of bugs) that it could make a good LR rifle, and probably a great one. With a 30" heavy barrel, I wouldn't be using it for walkabout hunting; and while I don't especially prefer taking long shots at game beyond the wily paperbeast, if you're gonna do it, you've got yourself a Slammer of God there.

Seriously, that chambering was made for delivering immense terminal energy way out there downrange. I just got to believe the recoil and noise are going to take a toll on you if you are planning on long shooting sessions.

I am waiting on special rings to come in for the stupid 19mm rails that CZ uses . It came with a nice rail but it needs to be drilled and tapped and all the gunsmith in my area are busy and are telling me 4-6 weeks to drill and tap 4 little holes .

Nice, if you haven't planned to already you might want to have them tap for the larger 8-40 screws.

That's really use dependent. A .338 is going to cut the wind better than a 7 or 30, the only disadvantages are cost, recoil, and situations requiring high round count. Again, depending on use, that may be significant or not significant.

A 7mm is great for shooting a 20 round F-class string at 1000, but a 338 makes the wind calls silly easy if fewer shots or less frequent shots are required.

Well I made the mistake of ordering a set of rings from optics planet . They have the slowest shipping time I have ever seen . I ordered enough to get the free shipping and then paid extra to get the 2 day shipping . All said and done it took three days for them to get the order shipped . (Just a set of rings and a sun shade for the cronus BTR) Now it falls where my 2nd day is Sunday so three days there as well . So I had 6 days to wait for my 2 day shipping order . So got bored waiting on the rings to get here and I wanted to see how bad the recoil was going to be without the brake so we had a few minutes of decent weather the other day .

CZ 550 Magnum action is a preferrred dangerous game action. CRF you should have no issues feeding that big pill.

Both EGW and the CZ webstore have fast shipping.

Put a 20 moa mount on top (40 moa total) and you should have enough elevation to get way out there.

And DAMN, you ain't got nuthin' for a recoil pad either. You and your orthopedic surgeon are going to have a lengthy relationship.

The recoil pad is there its just hard to see . It is s the one that Mcmillian puts on there stocks it was not that bad but I think i will put a brake on it

Good looking rifle, and the CZ550 is an excellent rifle. Not one most use for a precision build, but it's basically an updated or modern version of the classic Mauser. Hell for stout and reliable as ever. I've owned a few. I sold some to pay off some debts and break back into precision stuff, and actually regret selling some (especially the 550FS in 6.5x55 and the 527FS in .223)! I'll buy another of each with time.

Well I finally got to take it to the range . Here was my first 3 shot group. And I am far from a great shooter . So I think this one might be a keeper. This was only at 100 yards but I had to get it on paper .
