Will this set up work?

I am just getting into long range shooting, and wanted to ask people that know what they are talking about(because the gunsmiths in my area don't seem to know anything) if the set up that I want will be compatible.

I have a r700 .308 sps that is straight from the factory and not altered. I plan on getting a swfa ss10x42m scope and using leupold mark 4 steel 30mm medium rings with either a one or two piece Leupold mark 4 steel base(I don't know if a one or two piece is better). Will this set up fit all together with out any problems and will there be some room on the scope base for me to adjust to the proper eye relief for me?

Sorry for such a basic question, But I don't want to buy the stuff and then find out that it does not work together and then not be able to return the items.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

a 1-piece base will give you the most flexibility, but moving the scope around in the rings will usually get you there too. Seems like a great place to start. Shoot the hell out of it, then you will learn what you like and why, and what you don't like and what you want to change.

I haven't had any troubles, but if you are trying to load a magazine (AW or something) through the top it might get tight. I haven't had any issue with the standard remington internal magazine

You should take a look at the SWFA site and look at the IOR ring and 20MOA base package. It's low budget but decent kit. You will see a link to the stuff on their site when you go to the SWFA SS scope page.
The one piece base is the way to go for stability and a more recoil proof system. A phone call to SWFA will give you much more detail oriented information on the scope mounting solution.

Your basic rifle is good out of the box. Take the time to learn to adjust the trigger correctly yourself. Get yourself a Sekonk inch pound torque wrench and put everything together to spec. Check the action screws and make sure they are balanced in their torque spec at least. 65"# is the common spec for the 700 action.
Be ready to shoot a lot to get good, and get through the frustration as you go to longer ranges and see your itty bitty 100M groups open up at 200, then 300. Range will show your faults(breathing, trigger jerk). The main thing though, get out and shoot the heck out of it. Learn your rifle and optics. As you get the funds avaialble, send your barrelled action out to be tuned up, squared, etc. Get a better stock for it like a McMillan, or a Manners(many out there and plenty of folks here have their preferences)
It does appear you have looked a bit around this place and learned a little so far.

ps one peice bases are easy enough to load once you get the hang of it. The rounds slide right in. Swap out the bottom metal at a later date for a mag system and forget about it.

I would go with a one piece base. Use Blue Loc Tite on the Base Screws. Put the screws in and tighten them all down. Make sure the bolt will open and close. Then take the screws out one at a time, and put Loc Tite on them, and tighten them down again.

I would not rule out a Super Sniper in 16X for matches. More Glass is better to a point. That point is normally well past 16X for Tactical Matches.

Get a Scope Level. I prefer the one that mounts to the scope like a scope ring. You can adjust it.

Then you will need a Log Book and a Drop Chart calibrated for your Rifle and Ammo.

Harris Notch Leg Bipod. Get the Bench Rest Swivel Model, and install a Pod Lock on it.

A Rear Bag for under the back of the stock. Redman makes a good one. I like a brick shaped one myself. 3" X 4" X 5". Make sure it has some kind of Plastic Fill that will not soak up water, such as Beaney Baby Fill.

Work on this list of items before you start changing things that cost $$$ on the rifle. Like the Stock. Bolt Knob, Magazine Conversion, etc. You will need the listed items first.

That should have you in business.

One piece, no question. Make sure EVERYTHING is torqued properly including action to stock. Then shoot. Have fun and BE SAFE.

look for a one piece base. MCCree makes em good and at a good price. Everything else looks good as a start.
