Well, today is my 21st birthday and i always knew i wanted a 1911. From shooting my granddad's and uncle's, something about the platform just feels right. So today, as a present to myself (haha) I placed an order for a Wilson combat CQB elite. Their reputation online seems pretty outstanding and I've heard nothing but good things, so all you Wilson owners here, i just want to hear your feedback. (in reality its just a long wait and I'm super excited haha) thanks!

Re: wilson combat

Whats the current lead time?

I love my CQB w/ Rail- its on a SF overrun frame. Though only gripe is I wish the checkering on the grip is more aggressive- like a TRP's (I got my CQB used).

But well worth it.

Re: wilson combat

Had a CQB. Sold it after 6mo. Wilson didn't have the time to look at it - this was 2006-07 time frame. things may be different now

Feeding/extracting nearly 60% of the time. Ran nearly everybrand of ammo and used 47D's with it. also tried CM's. All the same.

Just my reality. Wasn't worth it and will not go back due to my CS experience.

I am sure you'll be happy. My personal choices would go to MARS (Steve Morrison) or Dave Lauck, Matt Gish, Pistol Dynamics. Again, just my opin.

Re: wilson combat

For the pricepoint I have never been that impressed with Wilson pistols. You pay a very high custom gun prices for a gun that is not a custom build.

At their pricepoints you can easily get a number of very high quality smiths to build you a custom gun rather than a semi custom factory gun.

That being said, the gun should serve you well.

Re: wilson combat

thanks for the input. I'm hoping here in a few years i can collect several 1911's built by several good smiths! i had never heard of mars armament before now, wolf, but they sure do look like some nice pieces.

how do you like that springer? i was looking HARD at a trp before i called wilson..

Re: wilson combat

TRP would've been great too. Just don't look back. you'll be fine I am sure.

Steve's Axiom build with some THUG tweeks is very nice IMO. That, and he offers a visit if you can make it to Utah.... which was important to me so the fit was correct.

Re: wilson combat

I bought one for myself after this last contract in Iraq. Like you, it was purely a treat! While I didn't spec out each little part for the build, they did make to how I wanted. I went with the CQB Tactical LE minus FCS or slide roll marks.

I'm only at about 1000 rounds on it so far. All 230 gr. Blazer brass. Had a couple of FTF's with that ammo in a Wilson 10 round mag. I'm blaming it on the ammo.

I switched to all Wilson 8-rounders and it's 100% with them.

Re: wilson combat

Have a millennium protector, best 45 I have ever shot. Have thousands of rounds through it, has never given me a problem. I usually shoot seller and bellot, fedral, or handloaded 230gr fmj. I do change the recoil spring every 2000 rounds or so, and use an 18.5 pound wolf springs. After shooting this pistol I sold two kimbers (custom target fixed sight...good pistols, and my cusomized springfield A1) without regret. If I do get another 45 it will be a Wilson, with the new combat sights. I still shoot my revolvers on occaision, but have to say I enjoy shooting the Wilson more than any other pistol, they are that nice.

Re: wilson combat

Its a gun you can shoot for a lifetime and then hand down.

Have a buddy whose had parts break on his but wilson took care of it ASAP.

I would love to have a CQB.

Re: wilson combat

I picked up a very gently used LWT bobtailed professional a couple of weeks ago

I got it because it happened to have the features, bobtail, lwt frame, serrated top of slide etc that I was looking for and the price was very right.

It's well put together, very smooth and accurate. But I believe that it's around $3200 new and for that money I'd be talking to John Harrison or Dave Erickson....

Re: wilson combat

I carry a Professional with an aluminum frame, slim grips, and a bobtail. The only time it's ever malfunctioned is when I loaded up some super light loads that wouldn't cycle the slide. Not the guns fault. I shoot it about every 3rd or 4th USPSA match just to stay competent with it. I've found that competition highlights the flaws in my gear and my technique, and the Wilson has been perfect.

I had an issue with the finish on mine. Turned out to be normal holster wear, but Wilson refinished the slide for me anyway at no charge. For my trouble, they also retrofitted it to slim grips for me, something I missed on the original order. This is not trivial on an aluminum framed pistol because the bushings are staked in. They did all this at no charge.

For me, their customer service has been outstanding, and I'm a demanding customer. I bought mine specifically for their reputation of treating people right, and I have not been disappointed. You may indeed be spending a little extra for what you get, but you are also buying their superb support.

Ignore the nay-sayers. You're getting a fine weapon at a fair price.

Re: wilson combat

I have a CQB compact and it is a fine pistol. With 1911's the statement that "you get what you pay for" is absolutely true. I have 2 full sized and one micro compact Springfield and they are very nice production guns. They run and fit damn close to the Wilson but I modified them to suit me.....something you won't have to do with the Wilson.

Re: wilson combat

I have a KZ-45 Stainless ...adj. night sights
I paid $ 800 for it used a few years back and have ran all brands of ammo thru it without a hiccup and still holds its 1.5" gauranteed zero...
Never shot one of the higher end pistols , but I can't bitch about this one at all!

Re: wilson combat

Too late to change your mind now heh?

A friend of mine loaned me their CQB for a week, and at the time I owned a S.A. TRP. Both the CQB and TRP were well run in with a few thousand rounds too.

Just manipulating the guns, the actions, etc. I did think the CQB was smoother. Tighter fit of slide to frame, etc.

Shooting them, I did not quite honestly notice much of a difference. I mean, how much better does one need than 1.5-2" at 50 or so feet? (rested)

A friend who is SWAT with a local agency runs a Nighthawk Custom. Again, a BEAUTIFUL gun.

But really, in the end, a 1911 I think more than any other is a very emotional purchase. that's not a bad thing. Hell, many of my guns aren't really practical, they're just fun.

If your Wilson is fun for you, than it has been worth every penny!! I think it's one HELLUVA way to celebrate your 21st birthday! Sooo whatcha gonna do for your 45th birthday? Order a matched set?

Happy Birthday(belated!) Post photos when it comes in!

Re: wilson combat

Thanks G45! I will definitely post up some pics. I can't lie, I'm pretty excited to see it! I probably will still end up getting a trp sometime in the future. As i said, i looked at them HARD. But oh well, we will see how the wilson is. i don't think i'll be disappointed. Went last week and took my carry permit test and got to get that paperwork sent off. But i appreciate the kind words!

I feel the same way. I have a 5" CQB in safe bought new years ago just gathers dust.

stuck with the od frame and black slide like in the pics on their site.. dunno why i just really liked it. it was between that or the black slide and gun metal gray looking frame, really liked that too...

Re: wilson combat

It has pretty much everything I want, including the integral mag well funnel and hard chrome finish. Also ordered with the ambi-safety.

Funny part is, I tend to waffle between lightweight Commander type guns and all steel Gov't models. Though the steel guns are more pleasant to shoot.

We will need pics of yours when it shows up.

Re: wilson combat

I built one myself, used a Wilson frame/slide/barrel prefitted kit, and all Wilson parts, ended u pwith the same gun as their $4475 Tactical Supergrade for around $2000 after I paid someone to checker the frontstrap, do a fit job on the magwell, and finish it in cerakote, black on top, OD on bottom, did use crimson trace laser grips though.

Re: wilson combat

I ordered a cqb elite the first year Wilson offered the model. I've put lots of rounds through it, and it's been 100% reliable. It's been my carry gun and I haven't looked back.

Re: wilson combat

You made an excellent choice. I have owned a number of great 45's to include Springfields, STI, Nighthawk and others. Really liked all of them, but when I decided that a 45 would be my daily carry then I sold all the others and have two identucal Wilson CQB's. 4 mags for each one. I shoot both of them atleast once every three months, and rotate the gun and mags at that time. Wilson Mags also. Shoot all factory ammo, no reloads. Not a malfunction and probably about 3000 rds through each weapon. Shoot primarily Hydra-shock ammo.

I had great times with the others mentioned here also, but believe in continuity so just went with Wilson.

Re: wilson combat
