Winchester Wins Ammo Contract

I am far from an expert, and am also curious about what the impact will be, but my gut tells me this will not cause the shortage to be any worse since Winchester has been getting government contracts for a long time. In other words I think this amount of ammo was probably already part of their normal ammunition production that they typically were doing. It seems to be the civilian market driving the shortage. I could be very wrong, this is just my theory.

Probably not, it more than likely results in them adding an additional shift to the Lake City Ammunition Plant. Lake City is owned by the DOD and is operated on a rotating basis by either Winchester, Federal or Alliant and maybe Vista Outdoors.

Lake City produces around 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition a year. With no foreign wars, our pending surrender to Iran and China and a raging anti-gun president it should not take long to figure out why the leftists need billions of rounds of ammunition more than is already planned for. I'm betting the leftists are ramping up for their American genocide.

This is good news for the civilian consumer.

Military ammunition must pass several Mil-Standard inspections. If it doesn't, the government rejects the lot. If it's made in the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, rejects must be pulled-down or Winchester reimburses the Army for the cost of components (Lake City is a Government Owned - Contractor Operated business). They can then sell it to the market as surplus.

Winchester's East Alton, Illinois plant (headstamp WCC) and Oxford, Mississippi (headstamp WMA) can sell their rejects directly to the market since it wasn't made using government raw material. Again, ammo submitted to the government MUST pass acceptance standards or it fails and is rejected. Too high a rejection rate and the government can issue a "Show cause" notification for the producer to prove why he should be able to keep his contract, and/or otherwise be fined, canceled, thrown in prison, or banned from future US government business.

If you've shot surplus or PD, XM, or otherwise ".mil equivalent" surplus 5.56 ammunition there's a good chance it's good, but for whatever reason didn't pass inspection. If you're interested, here are the standards for generic M855: M855 mil-standards < http://everyspec.com/MIL-SPECS/MIL-SPECS-MIL-C/MIL-C-63989C_AMENDMENT-4_37915/ >

For 55-grain M193: M193 specs
9mm NATO: 9mm

You can search that site to find the other small arms calibers (7.62, etc.).

I thought their White Box ammo was really bad. I mean it goes BOOM, but other than that, it has nothing going for it.

@sinister Sorry about the snide remark. I was trying to be funny. (kinda took off) I get that maybe, more ammo could come our way because of a new contract.
I don't wish bad for them in fact I hope they are awarded the contract for your very reasons.

Federal is Vista, and Remington ammo now.

I will miss the Federal XM193. Great shooting stuff.
If I was a betting man (and I'm not), I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see some kind of Winchester (maybe white box) marketed Lake City. Might not have M855A1 steel-tips, but you never know. De-milling is time and resource-intensive, when they could otherwise be making money selling it as legitimate surplus.

Idle production machinery in any industry leads to stuff rusting-rotting.
