ok im looking up how to correct for wind in the army's sniper hand book i found their formula that they use to correct for wind under that is the chart that they use to do the same thing so my problem is that the formula that they have does not match up with the chart that they use...so why is that and which one should i use the formula or the chart?....keep in mind that i would like to just use the formula cause i dont want to carry the chart around.......the army hand book that i use is U.S. army sniper training (FM 23-10)

For wind speed and direction change, taking the average would work. If its 2 mph at the muzzle, 8 in the middle and 6 mph at the target, average would be 5 or 6 mph. If one or two need to be 1/4 or 1/2 valued, factor that into the average. Same with direction. Then shoot and spot. This should work....I think. Nothing beats experience.

In my years of shooting I found that if if wind is varable its normally not that fast.
As wind increases, say 12-15 mph it gets constant, or doen't vary as much.
Under 12-15 mph when wind varies, in speed and direction, you should use mirage. Mirage seems to average out the wind.
By the time you try to figure the wind at 300, then 600, then 800 then 1000 and try to average it, it changes before you can complete your cauclations.
If you don't have the experience to read mirage, then take the wind speeds (and direction) at mid range.

That's the way I was taught to do it; and, it's still the way I do it, since it works and seems to get better results than other concepts out there. The other concepts are just too tedious to be useful.

Lets say you're shooting 1000 yards, read that wind at 500.
If you're shooting 600 read the wind at 300.
Lets say your wind is a 10 mph wind, then figure a 10 mph wind at 1000 yards and adjust accordingly.
Just like anyother wind, if the wind is a full value wind, make full value adjustments. If its a half value wind make half value winds.
You have to pick wind somewhere, mid range is about as accurate as you can get.

In case I miss-read what you're asking, focus the scope at mid range.
If you have a range flag use it. (divide the angle by 4 to give you MPH)
If no range flag the get an estimate from these indications.
3 MPH wind can hardly be felt, but smoke will drift
3-5 can be felt on the face
5-8 leaves in trees are in constant motion
8-12 wind will rase dust and loose papers
12-15 small trees begain to sway.
The best way to practice using wind and mirage is go to a team match and get squadded so as you have to score for one of the better teams (like the AMU team). Listen to the coach as he calls corrections as you observe the conditons in the scope. Make you're best guess then compare it to the coach's calls.
When at an individual match, watch what happens on the targets as conditions change. Know which are good shooters and new shooters. Watch as the new shooters get caught.
At matches don't set back and BS while waiting for your relay, get out the spotting scope and observe.
