I have to shoot from a raised building to shoot past 300 yards. I was shooting today at 600 yards before I got up in the building I sat outside for a few minutes and got the high, low, and average wind and the direction. Part way through shooting I was off target, the wind switched from a half value to a full value. All there is for indicators is grass and some tress further out past the targets. It was pretty tough to tell the difference between the half vs full value switch just from the grass/trees. All that’s really giving me is general direction and if there’s a gust. Without hanging a bunch of flags which I don’t want to do is there anything else I can look at? Or is this just a case of needing more practice reading the wind? I did see the mirage but to be honest I’m not great at reading that yet. Thanks in advance.

This is just a case of you needing to get better at reading the mirage. That will be your primary indicator of a change in that environment. The mirage does get less useful at a certain point though.

if you have a wind meter take some time to match a mph to the mirage. takes time to learn all the mirage conditions.

Also, the Wind Book for Rifle Shooters is the best book on the subject. The new updated book is the one to get.

Pick an indicator, tall grass/ tree that is about 1/3 way to target. Watch it carefully for a
while without shooting, with a spotter or scope. There will be a difference in the angle
of the grass and the bend of the branches and leaves. You can make or buy a wind vane
and use it to teach you to correlate mirage and environmental sign with your wind vane.

Bust out the spotting scope and work on learning to read mirage. When you’re on the other line, look at the mirage and then your usual wind indicators. This will help you get used to picking it up and seeing the value/speed quickly. Think of it like ripples in water and it becomes too easy.
Getting used to seeing this each time you go will help you when you move to the building or when you shoot at other locations.

    For mirage, watch the flow
