Advanced Marksmanship wind speed indicator ??

anyone here useing one of these divices?
if so which model are you using and
do you like it? do you think they are
of value to have for compative shooting..
thinking of getting one so I have an idea
how much wind it takes to move the flags.

Thanks for any advice...And maybe I should
mention I am shooting 250 yards is about the
max. distance..So do you still think it is worth
getting one of these divices..?

For your stated purpose a wind meter is confidence builder. You can do many sorts of experiments with the meter to better understand the effects of wind. You should also get a score book and a spotting scope as these tools collectively will give you an even greater understanding for proper counters for such effects. Unless you have an electronic meter coupled to a wi-fi device you will mostly only understand what the wind is doing at your firing point using a wind meter. This wind may or may not have any bearing on what your counter should be. I like to appraise wind at mid range. I believe it is an accurate indicator for the average wind from firing point to target. Some here have other ideas about how it should be done which are divergent from my way of doing it. I learned the way I do it from what I was taught by the United States Army Marksmanship Unit; and, in application, their way appears to work judging from my results in LR competitions, as well as EIC matches where there are no sighters allowed.

At the short distance you are shooting the effect of wind could be easily confused with a multitude of other shooting errors. It is therefore paramount that you call your shots and analyze the call/strike corollary.

I'd say a wind meter is a good tool to have. Even better would be the new kestrel with Applied Ballistics. Up to the minute calcs right on your dope chart, have seen one and if you rely on such things, NICE, especially if you travel to diff locations.

If you shoot in a permanent spot, here's a cheaper alternative;

These are actually nice too, but the constant wind takes a toll on them, but for the price, easy to replace. Once you get a handle on the wind speed, they're easy to read. Just buy the small pole for 9.00, and fasten it to a T post, with tie wraps or hose clamps.

that is so cool/ I just might go that route.Thanks...I wonder if they can be mounted on a stick or whatever....Maybe the poles are needed..I will be doing some research for sure...Thanks so much....John

At least buy one of their poles, the flags have a grommet on the top, and a plastic nut holds it on, good idea. I have a local upholstery lady make flags for us, securing them to a rod is tricky, we use grommets and tie wraps, but if the wrap goes, so does the flag across the prairie.
