World record 600 yd. 5 shot group.

Are bench rest groups in competition really shot that quickly??

Yes most are. In good to moderate conditions nothing is gained by shooting slowly as a subtle unseen change can move the bullet a long way. In tough changing conditions I'll slow down and try and read the changes and hold accordingly. There is a winner for group size and one for score. In good conditions you go for both. In bad conditions I go for score and get zeroed so that any change will, I hope, improve my score. That means a zero favoring say 3 o'clock knowing that in a change or let up in this case the group will move across the target towards the 9 o'clock position. I'll get to measure that target the end of the year to certify the record.

It's a totally different technique than a field rifle but I am no less impressed by the accuracy. Didn't someone at that club shoot a group slightly larger with a 308 and 155 Scenars a few years back?

That was shot at Oak Ridge TN. 308 Win High Power rifle a number of years ago. Other than a good barrel and hand loads it was nothing special. I was running the match and scored the target. Damn small group at the time. Now we see quite a few sub 1" groups.

Dave, I really don't know benchrest ranking at all but is the +.37" difference really that out of the realm of being competitive?
That's amazing!

This is the group I was referring to:

I didn't realize how well those rifles tracked in the bags- that was amazing. It looked like little or no correction for each shot, just push the rifle back forward to the start position, take a quick peek, and let the next go.

Not exactly point and shoot. Those are sand bags front and rear. No rails on that rifle although they are allowed on the forearm. Has to be a regular sand bag on the rear. Good actions, FL dies and technique make it smooth. Then tuning the rifle is another skill set.

Here's a link to the March match results. Top 5 in the morning had to average under 2" at 600 yds. Afternoon match a different story.
