The shop email gets tons of scam attempts but this is the worst one yet It’s almost like a parody of a scam. What the hell does “one of my own members” mean? And for God’s sake if they ever learn to not say kindly we’re all screwed.

Be thankful that English is so complicated. If this were an attempt in most languages the scam may well have been harder to spot. These guys bilk many dollars out of many people every day, and I’m glad they aren’t fluent in my language.

There's scammers always trying stuff. One very common one is for them to email me asking for my companies services and want to know "if I accept credit cards" . They say they have some house that needs all this work done (Which we don't do, we only build new houses), and then they want to go ahead and pay us for the work.

After having this attempted many times I wanted to find out how it resulted in them getting money from me. After talking with another business owner who played along to find out, I found out what they do. "They use stolen credit cards to send money, more money than would be needed by a lot. Then they want you to send them back the extra", of course that's the part where they rip you off. I have started telling them " oh ok sure, just give my partner a call and he can take care of it. He's a Nigerian Prince with tons of funds that he can't get through customs and he just needs you to send him a little money so he can get it out and will then repay you with many times what you spend"

That usually gets rid of em, but it gets tiring. I'm sure you guys get worn out with this crap too.

A few years back my secretary took a call, she was asked some questions with yes/no answers. Later we were contacted about payment for some services that we ordered, which we obviously did not. They were convincing and persistent enough that she was freaked out and all upset. They told her that she was recorded agreeing to the services and that we had been using the services etc. I took one of the calls, and it sounded like an American English speaking lady, and she wasn't impressed with what I told her I'd do to her when I arrive at her office if she and her buddies don't quit calling. They never got cc info or any payment arrangements, so not a whole lot to stand on. It must work, they were pretty convincing actually, my secretary is not a dumb person.

I also did get one on this forum like the one the OP described. As noted above, just look for the word "kindly" in the email.

prob via a successful phishing venture into our email account, someone figured out who the boss and head beancounter (me) were and spoofed the boss sending me an email to wire a couple hundred grand. i'd of course never do that without talking with him and of course it was a scam. i did have some fun with the guy though before he finally figured out he wasn't going to get a wire. pretty convincing though, if they only used their minds and energy for good though...

You should grade some college papers. It would convince you that some of these scams are not foreign.

I still get these from a car that was declared flooded back in Hurricane Harvey. A couple of those people I kept on the phone for a little while trying to get money out of them.

Also in regards to some scams I've seen where they try to prove they really have something on you by telling you your password, I'll post part of what I posted in response to someone who PM'd me about this.

The thing here is if you change your password once a year or whatever, you'll notice that the password they used is from like 4 years ago that they found on one of those times your info was hacked at a merchant or something. Most people don't like changing their passwords, so it still 'tricks' them into thinking this was real and it happened; when in fact, nothing has. Yet some fall for this because the password is the same password they've used for 10+ years and still use it right now.

I use to use my bank debt card a lot, and my bank card was getting hacked about 2-3 times per year when they switched to the cards with the chips it seem like that helped, but now I pretty much just us a CC card and then pay it off every month.

I can so relate to almost every scam everyone here has spoken about and, at first, became frustrated when I couldn't get them to stop calling. To make a long story short, I now play with them by asking a million questions until they hang up on me, or when asked for information, I put them on hold and walk away from the phone, never to pick it up again. If you have the time or it's not a business line, you can be creative in wasting their time. As long as you know IRS NEVER calls; there are no FOREVER zero % interest rates on credit cards; you never pay anyone in gift cards; if a family member is supposedly in jail and needs money to get out - call them. I'm sure there are many other scams, but learn to play the game back on them. As a last resort, you can always insult them. Have fun.
